Some people have the disorder within them already.  Some may or may not develop the outward symptoms.  There are however many factors that can trigger episodes which may eventually become a permanent state.  As an example psychosis can trigger schizophrenic episodes and certain drugs create those states of psychosis.  Prolonged use of drugs and the recurring states of psychosis is a bad recipe for someone who may have a genetic predisposition for a certain disorder.  It can become permanent.

Simpler answer:  a normal brain operates correctly when there is a proper balance of chemicals.  Medications change that balance.

Side effects of medications include a chemical imbalance, sometimes permanent but usually temporary IF the patient stops using the medications.

The worst part:  scientists and doctors do not understand WHY most psychotropic drugs work like they do.  They are experimenting on their patients hoping one drug, or a combination, demonstrates improvement.

Could it be that schizophrenia and bipolar disorder has been misdiagnosed for someone experiencing the extreme "down" from the euphoric "high" from extended drug use for decades?  I am just guessing but if someone is on drugs for more than half of time they are awake, over time wouldn't the body and mind consider it normal?  I have seen a few friends and co-workers go through the "bugs under the skin" episodes.  Then the next time I see them, usually the next day, they have fresh scabs all over their face and arms.  These fools pick at these imaginary spots believing to remove these "bugs".  I hate to admit but it is hilarious, to see someone subject themselves to doing these sort of things.  Sorry about thread jacking.  I just can't stand when people place blame on others/things, when the problem/blame falls on themselves to begin with.  Seems like in today's society, there is no such thing as common sense.  Instead, people seeking pity is much more common occurrence.

Making a joke and laughing at people who may actually have a disease or defect is quite immature.   :wtf:

True, some people are hypochondriacs, some are self-medicating, and others are victims of over medication from doctors.  Don't lump them all into the same category.  I've seen several who have real problems with their minds.  Some are fine with treatment, others never seem to respond.

Common sense includes the experience and knowledge to not mock someone if you don't have all the facts.

I got the impression he was referring to drug users....the implication being those members of only one of your three categories.  His point was that if you are going to abuse drugs, you get what you deserve with the whole bugs under the skin thing.  At least that is the way I saw it.  I didn't take it as him making fun of over medicated patients or hypochondriacs.
It is what it is.

No, he started his comment with the supposition that these people are misdiagnosed and long time drug users.  Then he proceeded to say he finds them hilarious.

Unless he knows the people he finds funny  are really as he supposes, he's rationalizing his behavior by saying they are "probably" long term abusers.

The impression you got is what he wanted you to see.  That's not what he said.

Thank you, at least someone sees it.

Yes, I have no sympathy for drug users, plain and simple.  Everyone has basically the same choices in life.  It is up to the individual to decide one's path in life.  And yes I do have to laugh at the wrong choices the people I know have made.  They were once great at whatever specialty they once had.  Sad part is I used to look up to some of the people I know who took that downward spiral.  The only people that would actually understand where I am coming from are the ones that known people evolve from before they started the drug use to the ups and downs of the drug use and the dreaded downward spiral of family life and career.   My opinion is based on my observations of a dozen or so people I have either grew up with or worked with who used to or still "rock the bowl".

Funny how he agreed with my assessment then isn't it?  It does appear the individuals he referred to he does know personally.  The impression I got is what he wanted me to see and not what he said?  Hmmmm......I got the impression from what he said.  I think you should read it again.
It is what it is.
