Is this legal to do?

Does one have to be a resident in the state that the said guns are stored?

Everything I know and hear is no. I know many people you have transfered to Hawaii and had to leave guns back home with parents, friends or in storage. You can even store them at one of those storage companies as long as it is not allowed by their cotnract.

According to the HRS 134-4, subsection (C) on transfer and possession of firearms:

"(c)  Any lawfully acquired rifle or shotgun may be lent to an adult for use within the State for a period not to exceed fifteen days without a permit; provided that where the rifle or shotgun is to be used outside of the State, the loan may be for a period not to exceed seventy-five days.

Going by that language, I would say no. Note, this State law only applies to rifles and shotguns, there is no verbiage on handguns. Of course, this law is essentially unenforceable outside of the state, unless firearms stored out of state are used in the commission of a crime.

That is true, although I would argue that loaning or storing a firearm out of state is a distinction without a difference as far as the state is concerned. If you are a HI state resident (which I assume the OP is since they have not stated otherwise) and you have a firearm that you own (bought and properly registered in Hawaii) outside of the state for longer than 75 days, then you are not following the law. By HI state law the only times where a rifle/shotgun is allowed outside of the state and outside of your possession is a loan that does not exceed 75 days.

Like I said, this is essentially unenforceable, because there is no mechanism to prove that you loaned something out greater than 75 days, aside from admitting it that you did so.

This won't have anything to do with Hawaii laws, it'll deal with the laws of the state you store the firearms at national laws. You'll never be cited for not storing your firearms in Hawaii.

AFAIK this is legal as FATMANWA said, but do your due diligence and check the local laws. Also this will be much easier if you are leaving them with family or a residence you own/rent.

I thought I saw a company in Nevada or Arizona that was offering this service already.  You can store your guns in another state.  I am sure there are some conditions and such, but it sounds like this is totally possible.

What is happening in NYC has really got me thinking.
I mean these law abiding citizens follow the rules, only to have it used against them.
Having said that, I feel really exposed right now. Especially being here, with my name on a list.
Shouldn't we be thinking about this now, instead of trying to do something about it after the fact.

This was several months back.  I can't recall where I heard/read it. I want to say the company was in Nevada.  If it comes to me I will post.
