Why do you need and AR15?
« on: December 12, 2013, 02:10:11 PM »
So when I watch, and getting very irritated doing so, things like Piers Morgan and he talks about gun control, he always asks "Why do you need and AR15?" like he tries to stump people with the question and act like its unnecessary for the public to have such a powerful weapon. I wanna know how you guys out there would answer this question, besides the obvious "its my second amendment right", im looking for answers with more conviction and substance. I myself would answer the question with a question like "why does someone need a 80 inch TV?" or "why does someone need a $300,000 700 horsepower car?" I always wondered what answers I could use to go on Piers Morgan and stump the guy whos not even from America and has no business getting in our business...

To me its just a semi-auto rifle that we need to fight tyranny in this great country should it arise.

What if we are invaded?  Ordinary citizens cant fight back.  I know the argument is it will never happen.

But you never know.  I dont trust our own government less alone any other government.

and Obama administration way less

I don't think those counter questions help validate the point. Firearms are a right to protect us from individual, group and government threat, as well as allow us to enforce our other rights when someone attempts to encroach upon them. If we liken the talking point to 'why does someone need a large tv?' or 'why does someone need an expensive car?', it then associates firearms with luxury rather than necessity, and therefore someone would not 'need' a firearm/ar15, as it would be considered more for enjoyment rather than its intended purpose.

Yeah it might not validate the point but in the case of piers morgan I think hes trying to make that exact point to say that the gun IS a luxury or just unnecessary/overpowered to simply defend yourself, like a big TV isn't necessary to just watch TV or an expensive fast car is unnecessary to simply get around.

Ok I may be staring a religious war but I think an AR-15 carbine is an excellent choice for a home defense firearm.

1. It's powerful enough to stop someone big and/or on drugs.

2. It's lighter and easier for a woman and/or teen to handle... much better than a 12 gauge.

3. A rifle is more accurate than a pistol (especially for beginners)

4. Controllable recoil.

5. You won't have to worry about running out of bullets. The saying "the loudest sounds you don't want to hear is a click when you expect a bang, and a bang when you expect a click" comes to mind.

6. The 55gr .223 bullets are small and fast and overpenetrates less than a #00 buck, 12ga slug or 147gr 9mm bullet.
I think, therefore I am armed.

The question is invalid coming from a NON US citizen who makes a living criticizing our rights. The country from where Piers is from took away all their gun rights. He is like a fly on a turd. Insignificant and deserves to be swatted. In fact, someone should flip the script and cite history - Britain was the reason why we have the Bill of Rights.

It's a cool looking super cheap and reliable gun (ultra customizable, more accessories then a glock!) which is effective as well as fairly accurate (1-1.5moa out of any ar15 is not uncommon) and a hell of a lot of fun (low recoil helps new shooters get into the sport).  You can build one for about 500 bucks right now and 30 round mags run ~8-17 bucks a piece (100 round mags run about 118-300 bucks).  Ammo is cheaper then .45acp when you buy in bulk and that's in Hawaii where ammo cost more then anywhere else in the country.

you can use it to hunt, plink/target shoot, self defense, and customize/upgrade.  It is cheaper then a mosin nagant (200 bucks, should be only $75-100) when you think about it after you have to buy the gun, take the time to clean it up, buy a scope (?) and pay someone to mount it (100 bucks), buy a new stock (80-200) or clean up the old one, and then you will still have a bolt action rifle with low mag round count which is shooting probably ~3moa (yes there are some shooting sub-moa but there is always an exception to the rule).

In the end nobody really needs one but don't complain if you can't defend yourself.  That and its America where its not a privilege, its a right that we should be able to own one!

Turd polishing ....

Buy it, clean it up and shoot it with irons sights!

Buying an old surplus rifle and doing all that optics, stock, and work on it is kinda pointless ... It's like dressing Betty White up to look like Lady Gaga.

true but its just an example of how cheap ar15's are right now.  I could have used building up a 10/22 as an example as well.  Either way I think you totally missed the point which was AR15's are great and everyone should have one.  There is no real reason why any potential gun owner and every current gun owner shouldn't have one at this point.  If you can afford a handgun, you can afford an AR15!

I hate to say this, but don't fall into his trap. You are trying to answer HIS question. But HIS question is one that cannot be answered the way YOU want to answer it. And if you try and answer HIS question you will fail and he will look superior. Let's face it, truth be told, none of us truly NEED an AR-15. The answer to the question is NOT to engage the NEED portion of his question. But to give the answer that 100% of all Americans have. And that is that I OWN an AR-15 because I want one and I can own one or two or ten. I can shoot it better than any other firearm I own because I practice with it weekly. And I believe it is every American's duty to own one as our way of saying shove it up your ASS Piers Morgan and all the LIBERALS in our Federal, State and Local Governments! There is no better way to say shove it than to buy/build another one.

Notice he never answers any of his guests questions directly. So why not do the same? Especially when he designs his questions to work his way and no other way.

SCIENCE THAT CAN’T BE QUESTIONED IS PROPAGANDA!!!

Exactly. Every reason given in this thread was argued, not debated over by Piers. He argues with emotions and tries to rile up his audience. He was owned by some aggressive, sharp individuals. The never ending rabbit hole is that "Why stop there, how about a tank, a nuke?!!"

If Iran can have nukes, then damnit, I want one too!!!!

I love my Garand.  ;)

It has been only recently that ARs have become an acceptible caliber weapon to most people.  Old schoolers concidered 5.56/.223 a varmint round, not to be taken seriously.  I have heard this is the reson the 90's 'assult wepon' ban got passed.

Why do you feel the need to derail the point of this thread to bash on AR's?  You must need attention don't you...  Good for you.  You don't like the most popular rifle in America, congrats on being different.

Lol.  I don't think his intent was to bash ARs, just that other weapons hold more interest.  :)
