I haven't gone to Koko Head in at least a year, probably more.  When I was going, I'd go early Sunday morning to try and be among the opening crowd at the rifle bullseye range.  Even then, the waiting list started up really early - so how is it now with the reduced hours?  A coworker of mine who still shoots on Sunday mornings at the rifle bullseye range says it's starting to get crowded even at 0630.  Also, how do the weekdays look for the rifle and pistol ranges?

Its been rough, I used to be one of the early guys too......to my dismay......7:30 isnt early.......The last time I went about 2 months ago, I was talking to the range guy said a guy was waiting @ one of the stalls by 5:30 with his newspaper and McDonalds Coffee.....dude the range doesnt open for another 2 and 1/2 hours WTF?.........

Anyways.......7:00 on the average to get a stall  7:30 to get on the list and usually be on a stall after the first line call reset?  Other than that I hear guys going in the later afternoon or lunch when less people come.....but you know as well as I....it gets hot out there at that time.......

I've never tried shooting without a bench, but I don't really need it since I'm just shooting an un-scoped AR.  I've never tried shooting between benches - I heard the RO's don't really like that and are there actually pipes in the ground for target racks between benches?   And I remember the far left lanes at the rifle range usually being populated with target shooters doing position shooting - or is there a better chance getting one of those lanes later on in the day?

I always shoot prone between benches, but you have to have the bench to one side or the other because there are no pipes for between.
Never had a problem with the RO's.

I see.  I guess if the waiting list is on, it won't matter because I'll still need a bench.  So how about weekend afternoons and weekdays?

Saturday's are not as busy as Sunday's most times, afternoon is sometimes better. If I'm not shooting at steel I just do prone on the left side. Week days, that I have seen (which are few and far between), have been quite busy. Less hours = more people cramming for space.
Also, weekdays only about half the bays are opened up. Don't know why.
Any way you look at it, it'll be hit or miss (waiting list wise), I've seen it getting worse and worse.
Just gotta get there early, and hope for the best.

Yeah it's been awhile that I've shot rifle side too.  I've been shooting more handguns lately.  My vote is for a shooting range on the Leeward side but like that would ever happen.

Ive seen guys set up their own steel Targets....those are the black powder guys though.......I think in reality the holes are just to give you alignment where you need to shoot, but if you have a free standing target Im sure you could just set it up in the lane your shooting in?

You can set your own targets out there, subject to a couple of provisions.
1. Do NOT shoot the steel pipes in the ground.
2.  Steel targets can be placed at 50 yards for .22 only.  Any other caliber, they have to be at 100 yards.
3. If your target creates a mess, you need to police it.

So ground-resting targets are fine, subject to the above. 

What I've never asked about is if you can place them at other distances. 

Ah thanks for the info guys.  I was thinking it might be wise to build a second free-standing target to bring along just in case.  Maybe not even a seperate target, but just a portable base to fit the regular target into.  I'll draft something up the next time I'm at the range. 

As far as distance goes, the only rifle shooting I could see practicing at closer than 50 yards would be a shotgun.

You guys should lobby for Makua to go public on weekends.  That would make a bad ass range.
