Digital or combination gun safe? What's your preferance?
« on: December 13, 2013, 04:12:29 PM »
Wondering what kind of safe do you prefer and why. I'm in the market for a gun safe and wondering which one to get

Digital safes are easier and more forgiving to get into under stress, combo safes are less likely to fail and lock you out of your own safe, but trade off is ease of access, especially under stress. Plus you can open a digital by feel once you learn it, so the need for light isn't as important. I go digital with a keyed/combo entry as well for that "oh shit" moment if the pad is dead or the solenoid doesn't fire.

Have both. Don't limit your options. Don't have enough guns to warrant owning more than one safe? Buy more guns!

Digital is faster but combination is more secure unless you spend top dollar.

I would opt for the old school mechanical dial.  If one wants a quick entry to a mechanical dial, make it a routine when closing the safe to do the first 2 or 3 numbers in the dial combo.  Then all one has to do is spin the dial to the last number, then bam one should be in the safe.

I forgot what company offers both, a mechanical dial and electronic keypad.

Seen too many vids on youtube complaining about electronic key pads.

Combination is out of the question if you are storing your go to gun in there, because retrieving it would be a nightmare in an emergency.  If it's just storing the extra's then that is fine.  Take this advice for what you paid for it!

That's a great idea. I never thought of it

I used to do that with my locker in intermediate school.
That and penny locking work well. (in lockers)

I prefer the old push button (cypher) type combination safes. Manual and quicker then dials.

Oh wow look like I'm leaning toward the combination type of lock. Wanted the digital one because of the size. What would be the best place to get a combination safe? Been looking at the one from sports authority the stack on safe

I remember reading about some kind of gun safe where the key is actually a ring on your finger, that you wear when going to bed?

I don't remember if it was mechanical or electronic.

Thought about it, but also thought about a burglar just slowly rotating the dial and while tugging on the handle just to see if that was how someone left his safe.....................
