Anyone remember the "Coconut Wireless News"?
« on: December 14, 2013, 08:27:12 PM »
Back in the day (early 70's) I remember early mornings of being driven to school and the radio would be on because....well it just was.  KGMB morning talk radio was always on and I can remember hearing the familiar (but fading away from age and my memory) sound of the "Coconut Wireless News" jingle.  The segment was hosted by J Akuhead Pupule (Hal Lewis).  Though I really cannot recall what he talked about, even in general (my Google-Fu has suggested that he was a cross between Rush Limbaugh and Paul Harvey), I do remember that as part of his segment of just following it was the, also, familiar and rousing theme track of "Chickenman".....a radio serial that was broadcast every weekday morning and replayed on the weekends for those who missed it to get caught up.  I have recently found the entire collection of "Chickenman" on CD but I'm afraid I cannot find an audio file of the"Ccoconut Wireless news jingle.  Anyone have some assistance for an old fan taking a trek down memory lane?

"On the coconut wireless (coconut knocking sound effect)...on the coconut wireless (coconut knocking sound effect)...."

Don't they still use the coconut wireless theme on KSSK morning show?

I listened to the Coconut wireless and Aku and Chicken Man when I was a small kid.
After I grew up, I worked with Aku, Agapito, Ted Sax, Granny Goose etc. when Cec Heftel still owned the station.

No idea, I live on the mainland now, have since 1994.  I left for basic training Jan '84 and came back after the Gulf War and ETS-ing in '91.  No idea what is on the radio there these days except the occasional online stream of KPOI.

Some of those names are familiar but I cannot honestly say I remember what they sound like.

On the coconut wireless.... tuke tuke tee tuke....

J. Akuhead Pupule!

And That was a full blast saying.
“Not trying to spread rumors but I heard on the coconut wireless.....“
“ how you know ? Brah, I heard on the coconut wireless...”

You couldn’t commit mischief (well actually you could but wasn’t easy.) without the coconut wireless getting back to parent, neighbor or relative.

I remember Aku did not like rock music at all and refused to play any of it. He was from the swing big band / Lawrence Welk era.
He commented on the Creedence performance on the Ed Sullivan show the day after it aired. I was disappointed in his opinion
but that was Aku. He always stood his ground and everyone knew he called it as he saw it.

I heard one story on how he got his Aku nickname. Early in his career he announced the wrong time on the radio. He was an hour
ahead of the actual time. A lady listener thought she was late for work and dashed out of the house with out her pants or skirt.
The angry lady called him up and told him: "You crazy aku head, You one hour off"
