Coming To Hawaii
« on: March 08, 2011, 10:23:46 AM »
I am in the United States Army and will be moving to Schoffield Barracks in July to serve with 25th Infantry Division.  My wife and I both have concealed carry permits from Texas and love to shoot and enjoy teaching our little girls the same.  I have been trying to figure out the laws in Hawaii by reading the Hawaii Police Department website and Honolulu's PD website and it seems pretty clear cut to me, but I guess I have a glimmer of hope inside that tells me it's not as bad as it seems.  From what I can tell I have to have a permit to get a permit to get my weapons registered (one permit per weapon,) and that it costs quite a bit and takes time to get done.  Once that occurs then I can get someone to send them to me via FFL.  I'm not aloud more than a ten round magazine in my handguns or my M4, and I can not carry concealed in Hawaii at all unless I can prove that I am in danger and then get a CHL for only that particular county.  Coming from Texas this all seems pretty bleak, so any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

You only have to pay One time to get your permit. This is for finger printing and background.
From what I understand you don't need to have an ffl transfer your weapons if they belong to you.

CCW is never issued to private citizens. We are trying to work on that. Check out Chris at http://hawaiiccw.com/

For more information on that.

Hopefully some of our military members can chime in with more details, as I am not experienced in this type of thing.

I hope your move goes smooth and safe.
See you soon.  :shaka:

1. Bring your guns with you when you move.  Take them to HPD and say "I moved here from out-of-state, and I brought these guns with me."  You do not need a permit to relocate guns that you already own.  The permits are specifically for the acquisition of a firearm that is already in Hawaii.

2.  Should you wish to buy a gun while you are here, you will then need to get a permit.  For handguns, one permit for every gun.  For rifles and shotguns, you only need one permit per year.

3.  The first time you go in to get a permit, you'll be charged.  This covers what the FBI charges to run your fingerprints.  Last time I did it, the cost was $19.50, I think.

4.  You can't carry concealed.  Hawaii is a may-issue state, and they choose never to issue.

5.  You can't carry openly, either.  Unless your job requires it and you are on duty.

Welcome to Hawaii!

Tom about summed it up... Only thing to add for handgun purchases, you'll need either a letter from your CO stating you've gone through firearm training, or an affidavit from one of the firearm training courses offered on the Island (Hunters Ed, Life, etc.).

As stated earlier, there is a one time payment of $19.25 for finger printing and FBI background checks (take the exact amount to HPD, they don't cover change for a $20). After that it's just filling out paperwork each time you go to register. Pain in the arse, but it's what we gotta deal for now.

Oh and big welcome to the forums and the Islands!

Welcome to Hawaii! Don't bring anything considered an "assault pistol", as there is an arbitrary ban on it here.

Word of the year is!: Arbitrary.
