Other than the scope clearence and the cool factor, is there any other purpose for the side charging handle on an AR15? Thinking of doing that to mine... :geekdanc:

I really do not know what the purpose of an AR-15 side charging handle, but I saw a guy in one of the Hawaii Practical Shooter videos reload his AR, by using the side charging handle.  He was wearing some kind of ACU load-out. It looked like he was just plinking around during the match. The same guy is also wicked fast at getting his 1911 into operation.  He is also in their night shoot video as well.

Here is the link:  http://www.hawaiipracticalshooters.com/

Hope this helps!

I always thought it was just a cosmetic/asthetics mod.  Really it's just one more thing to get snagged on or break down.  :P

I was dreaming about doing something like that with a new build. I always thought the current way is super clunky.

Wow.... that wasn't what I had in mind but thats interesting REN... The one I was talking about was the one they screw right into the bolt on the dust cover side....I know "dust" may get in ::)  but i'ts only a big deal if I'm rolling around in dirt and decide to not clean it after a shoot... ;D

Not sure you can just screw it on.  That's Robert Whitley's match milled upper.  It is thicker than a normal upper, I'm thinking a regular would not be structurally sound if you milled out the room for a side charging lug.
Also, the carrier is hardened, so you can't just drill and tap it.
Best bet would be to get an upper like that and build off of it.   Might as well do it in 6mmAR or Turbo!  ;)

Yeah, thats what I've heard.. The bolt is extremely hard to drill and tap. I like the whole AK charging deal.. It's funny, even after the purchase of an AR, I still have those AK "tendencies" ;)
