Welding a magazine to a lower receiver
« on: February 04, 2014, 08:48:09 PM »
I decided to build a sleeve around the magazine to make it more durable and easier to weld to the lower receiver. I used .090" thick 6061 T-6 aluminum. The sleeve is not actually welded to the magazine, but around it. After the welding, when the metal cools it will shrink around the mag and be pretty much permanent. This was just an experiment with a blemished lower. I think I'll use 1/8" thick aluminum for the next one so I can clamp it in a vise more securely. You can't use a mag well vise block any more. I took it to HPD to get their comments on building the pistol lowers I was registering. I didn't know there were that many uniforms back there. They said I can never sell it and as long as I don't put a butt stock on it, I should be good to go.

Can never sell it?
Why?

There are no laws under HRS or ATF that restricts the tranfer of a handgun.

Nice job!

Have you thought of using silver solder to bond the mag and receiver?

If you can silver solder aluminum, I've never done it. I'm better at welding than silver soldering anyway.

I was thinking it's like an 80% lower, you can build your own gun, but not for the purpose of reselling it.

The correct term is "transfer" not " sale".
Home builds can be transferred.
Home builds cannot be sold for a profit.
One can transfer an unlimted home builds but the ATF frowns on multiple transaction(s).

I don't like this gun, I'll transfer it to you.
But give me a fee for my troubles. So basiclly the gun was not sold.

What if you just weld a piece to defeat the mag release?  Mag cannot be released, therefore not a detachable mag?

Thats interesting. So with that all being done can you put a less that 16 inch barrel on it?

I asked in his other thread.  Apparently since its not an assault pistol, it doesn't matter.

This is what I was thinking. I was wondering if I could just replace the spring in the magazine release button with a barrel of some sort, not allowing the button to be pushed in. Instead of welding the magazine, incorporating the existing magazine locking design and removing the method of actually releasing it.

Since it is not detachable, could you not use a 100 round drum mag?...... >:D ;D

I believe we are still limited to ten rounds as it is a pistol.

No laws say you cant!
10 round limits only detachable magazines.

Beyond a reasonable doubt , can the magazine detach from the pistol?

NO

Then the below cannot apply!

134-8c
.      (c)  The manufacture, possession, sale, barter, trade, gift, transfer, or acquisition of detachable ammunition magazines with a capacity in excess of ten rounds which are designed for or capable of use with a pistol is prohibited.  This subsection shall not apply to magazines originally designed to accept more than ten rounds of ammunition which have been modified to accept no more than ten rounds and which are not capable of being readily restored to a capacity of more than ten rounds.

It may not be an assault pistol but I don't see why normal pistol rules would not apply to this as it is just a normal pistol.

Pistols with "Non detachable magazines" do not need to comply with a "detachable" magazine law.

Really? So theoretically, I could permanently attach a 50 round drum to my glock lower and it would be fine for me to have 50 rounds loaded into it?

Yes, completely legal as defined by HRS134-8c
Because it's no longer a detachable magazine.
HRS134-8c only applies to detachable magazines.
