Can I use metal gongs like I do on the rifle side on the pistol side? If can are there any caliber restrictions?

Any reason why not? Pistol rounds are not as strong as rifle rounds and the targets are setup at the same distances.

I think steel gongs have to be at least a 100 yards, right? The pistol side is, like, 75 feet.

I can't explain why you can't set up metal gongs on the pistol side, but you're more than welcome to go down and get an official answer for yourself as this forum is not moderated or sanctioned by the City and County of Honolulu.

You can use gongs on the rifle side at 50 yards as long as you use up to 22lr rounds. then anything except 50bmg at 100 yards. I find it hard to believe you can't use something like a 9mm on pistol side but you can use .416 at rifle side.

If you want to shoot steel, then go to the silhouette side. 50 yards for pistol gongs are already set up. $5 covers range fees for all day use.

The only steel that is shot at 25 yards is .22lr for the smallbore fun shoots on the Sunday of the 1st full weekend of each month( if I use the word "match", people get scared and don't show up).

Cost is only $5 and it covers all day range fees, match fees and lunch (must compete to eat). When you register at the booth, declare that you will shoot the match and your fees are waived until match registration. All shooters and spectators are required to wear eye and hearing protection.

A total of 40 rounds are fired. Range commands are electronic. The course of fire is in 4 stages. Each stage of fire is 10 shots per yard line fired in two strings of five rounds in 2 minutes and 30 seconds. 10 chicken targets at 25 yards, 10 pig targets at 50 yards, 10 turkey targets at 75 yards. 10 ram targets at 100 yards. Sighters are done on the “swinging targets” one relay prior to your call to the line.

All .22  rifle shooting is shot from the unsupported standing position. 22 Pistol shooting is done from the Creedmoor position or unsupported prone. Rifle are classified by “light” (under 8 lbs) and “heavy” (8 lbs and over) with or without optics. Match rifles are not really required. Any safe and reliable .22 that can hold 4” groups at 100 yards may be used. Shooters may enter more than one category, but must pay an additional $5 per gun.

Competitors are expected to help set up the targets unless you exhibit a serious medical condition. Lunch is provided, but pot luck side dishes and snacks are welcome.

There is a large steel 3'X3' plate at 50 yards that you are welcome to shoot at with your pistols. This is proportionally equivalent to shooting a 6" square at 8.125 yards. I practice double action controlled pairs with my 2.25" barrel .357mag SP101 and 4"barrel .22 SP101 from the low ready. I also shoot my service pistols there. You are allowed to load more than 5 rounds per magazine.

The reason shooting steel closer that 25 yards with centerfires is discouraged is due to the danger of riccochets. If you don't believe me, look on the roof of the range. We don't need another incident shutting down Koko Head.

I know about the silhouette side but my question is for the pistol side. I also do shoot matches from time to time. If they allow gongs to be used on the rifle side why not the pistol side? I use paper and gongs on the rifle side because it's cheaper, you can use larger calibers (not restricted to .22lr), and you have a choice whether to shoot paper for accuracy or gongs for fun and the sound it produces. If they won't allow under 25 yards how about 50, 75, or 100? We can make up the distance with larger sized gongs.

Answer is NO.
Reason why ? The stands are so close together you would destroy frame of the guy next to you.
The pistol range is only built for 50yrd. IDK how you would put a target at 100yrd lmk when you do would love to shoot pistol at 100yrds.
