I was told because most folks call a cartridge a bullet and they don't know how to differentiate the bullet from the case or cartridge so they call it a head.

OT but kinda related. I was watching a recording of Warrior POV on DVR and caught a (supposedly?)  Vietnam vet emptying half the clip of his m16.

Did they call them clips then?

I've seen it mostly on forums that don't require a minimum post count to access the classifieds. And it is due to the general ignorance of correct terminology (on the buyers end)...Adding "heads" to the post saves a lot of time and misunderstanding.

Did they call them clips then?
It wouldn't surprise me if they did, nor would I fault them for it.  Their generation grew up knowing the M1 as standard service rifle and likely used one in basic training.

I grew up using that term. Never really thought about it. In conversation, I use the terms interchangeably. Usually to make sure that my explanation is very clear. Many times I am talking to less enlightened people who would be confused if I used the term "bullet". They would confuse bullet and cartridge.

Sounds dumb, just as much as people calling magazines - clips. The head is a term that is used to describe the case.

Makes sense. Probably got used to the M1 clips and became a habit to call the ammo that.
