Questions about Out-of-state CCW licenses???
« on: April 03, 2014, 10:46:27 AM »
I hope we get issued CCW licenses in Hawaii soon. In the meantime, it got me thinking about applying for CCW licenses for other states. Being a novice about this, I had a bunch of questions I thought I'd ask here. Thank you for the replies in advance.

1. I heard Utah, Arizona, etc but have no idea where to begin navigating these things. What other State CCW licenses would be good to apply for if one plans to travel with a CCW in mainland USA?

2. Is there an annual cost money-wise and training-wise to maintaining out of state CCW licenses?

3. At the last gun show, I saw B. Halemano offering CCW classes. I also just saw a post about OGC offering CCW classes.  Are most CCW classes specific to the requirements of a state's CCW license?  Do the classes vary that much?

What CCW classes should one consider to meet the license requirements for out of state CCW licenses?  One class for each state?

Thank you!

If you want to get a non resident permit Florida is one of the best because it has reciprocity with a large amount of other states. As far as I know, Maine is the easiest to get  via the mail because you do not have to submit fingerprints or anything like that and last I checked the cost was $60 but  it may have recently gone up. You will only need to provide a copy of a handgun training class such as the one required to get a handgun in Hawaii. I believe they just passed legislation a few days ago in Maine to require that if you want a non resident permit you must have a permit in your state of residence so you might want to apply before that takes effect.

Most permits are good for x number of years and then you just have to pay a fee to renew it. Some states do require different training and requirements it is not one size fits all.

I took the CCW course from Frontsight, it was a 5 day course that allowed me to get CCW in Nevada, Florida, and Utah, with reciprocity about 30 states total..  Was a good and cheap class.  However I forgot to send in my permit applications, and didn't realize the course eligibility for the permit expires after 1 year.  So I have to take it again.

I took the Utah non-resident CCW class a few years back from Koa Services, back when they were still operating.  It was a decent enough class, that I mostly took for information.  I also ended up not sending in the registration form so I ended up not getting to permit, but the information was still great.

I've been mulling around the idea to do it again.  I think its valid in 33 states.

Just took the ccw class the other week, it's a Utah permit, Eugene at ogc teaches it, call him 808 -497-7067 when the next class is. The Utah permit covers the largest area like Mac said about 33 states, so if u travel a lot to to free states your good to carry but make sure you do your research cuz within the states you may have areas or zones in which you cannot carry. The permit is valid for 5 yrs and after that you can renew online for like 15 bucks or something small like that. Take his class, and get yo ccw! I kinda travel a lot and I go to pa a lot so now I'm bringing my m&p shield with me :)  the class was very informative! Hopefully we can carry here soon.

One thing people forget is that Hawaii has no clauses prohibiting non-residents from applying and having a license.
