Phoenix Arms 22LR pistols banned in hawaii?
« on: April 04, 2014, 05:53:11 PM »
I was looking at the HP22A for a few months now thinking about buying one. seems like a poor man's walther ppk .22 and i love the PPK and have been looking for a nice inexpensive .22lr pistol. this seemed perfect.  i was on Budsgunshop today and saw a disclaimer for hawaii.

Hawaii
The following are prohibited:
Handguns with a capacity exceeding 10 rounds.
Any pistol or revolver, the frame or receiver of which is a die casting of zinc alloy, which has a melting
temperature of less than 800 degrees F
Cobra, Phoenix Arms, and Heritage Arms firearms are prohibited.
Semiautomatic handguns which accept a detachable magazine and have TWO or more of the following
features:
 Magazine that attaches to the pistol outside of the pistol grip
 Threaded barrel capable of accepting a barrel extender, flash suppressor, forward hand grip or silencer
 Barrel shroud
 Manufactured weight of 50 oz or more (unloaded)
 Centerfire pistol with an overall length of 12 inches or more
 Semiautomatic version of an automatic firearm (not to include a firearm with a barrel 16” or more in
length)
 No ammunition.
 No stun guns or TASERs
No pressurized aerosol spray products (including pepper spray).

What the hell? since when? ive been on other sites checking shipping costs on the HP22A like lanbos armory, never got a disclaimer claiming it's prohibited like that during the checkout process. anyone got a link to the legislation that specifically bans Phoenix Arms pistols? this is ridiculous.

Saw both Cobra and Phoenix Arms in a local store today. Have previously bought a Phoenix Arms weapon and registered it at the Police Department without any problem. Quite a few mainland sellers are misinformed about the laws in Hawaii, one way or another. See it all the time on Gunbroker.

I have owned two, one just last year.  It's a cool inexpensive handgun.  Info on th web for those that don't like all the safeties.

ah thank god. man, buds has some wacky policies. makes me wonder if feinstein has their CEOs ear.

what LGS had them and at what price? id rather buy locally than online, lanbos had it for $108+ $12 shipping. is the LGS anywhere near the normal $130 retail price?

Pretty sure all sellers these days are inclined to err on the side of caution. Pretty easy to lose your license if you make one simple mistake (even if you didn't know it was a mistake due to their vaguely-written policies), if they (BATFE) decide they want to make an example of you, or just for fun apparently, because they can. See: EP Lowers, etc.

I didn't really look at the prices as I was just very casually browsing while waiting  to pick a couple of guns. This was in Hilo, by the way. Seems a very high percentage of people posting (including most of those posting really good deals in the classified for sale section  :() are on Oahu. Don't forget if you buy online you pay not only shipping, but a transfer fee to the local FFL who handles the transfer. Often still less expensive to do it that way than pay the outright local price plus tax, at least for some items.

I wouldn't trust something you see on some gun store website about Hawaii gun laws.

Check the H.R.S.
Your number one Option for Personal Security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

I have one legally registered. Some have issues with cycling etc. But, it is a good little handgun and my 10 yr. old swears by it. I bought one for my 22 yr. old and she has a CCW in OHIO for this . Small, easily concealed and not too loud for the female species. I also will purchase more for every female child I have (3). Plus an air force survival rifle, .22 bolt action and a 30 cal long gun for each of my children (6).Along with 2000 rds of ammo each firearm. My eldest son has his and I am working on the rest of the clan. God Bless this website and its participants. God Bless the USA.

I'm not saying this is the case, but the statute HRS 134-15 states the zinc alloy melting point. I did see that the HP22A is made from a zinc alloy, but don't know the melting point.
I am not a lawyer.

I was in my Hilo store today so I checked the prices: Phoenix Arms HP22 $129, Cobra 9mm $129. Asked the owner about the 800 degree melting point minimum law... never been any questions or problems when registering them as dealer, or customers as retail purchasers. I wrote Phoenix Arms an email about it but haven't gotten a response yet.
