Can I shoot a pig in my backyard?
« on: April 20, 2014, 06:09:43 PM »
I read in a prior post that you can't go hunting on your own private property without a hunting license. I have a hillside property in Kalihi Valley that includes the hillside to the top of the ridge. The last couple of weeks I could hear and see the bushes moving above my yard and my dogs have been waking me up late at night. Yesterday evening was the first time I heard grunting. I called the police substation and asked if I could shoot a pig on my property (residential neighborhood) and the desk guy said "yeah I guess so". Well I never got a visual of the head from my yard and I would only take the shot if it was perpendicular to the hillside. It would be about 25 yards. I went up there later with a bow hunter and he said there are several large animals going through the area. They will be hunting on my property, but if a pig happens to make itself available should I shoot it?

Oh yeah, I don't have a hunting license.

Set up a trap to catch them, circle style so once one goes in the others see and will want in too and you don't have to keep resetting it.  Go later with a rope and take out the one you want and leave the rest to grow bigger.
Put up signs selling live pigs all sizes, dead or alive, cooked or un cooked. Graduation season is coming up.  Catch a few big ones and its easy money.  Possibly find a source of food or slop to feed them.
If your property is big enough you could also make an imu and sell kalua pig, or smoke meat.

Just my opinion of what I would do if I had pigs in my backyard.

Yes you MUST have a hunting license to "actively  hunt " the pigs. Pig season is normally year round.
But you can shot the pig, without a license if they are a treat to your life and sometimes property.

DLNR is responsible for hunting violations not HPD. It's easier just to get a license than deal with the hassles. They are still cheap right?

I don't think its legal here to sell Wild game.

Selling wild meat is not regulated by DLNR but could fall under usda / Ag dept.

You are correct... Only applies to animals taken fron Public Hunting Areas which I see is very difficult to enforce.

http://files.hawaii.gov/dlnr/dofaw/rules/Ch123/HAR_Title13_Ch123.pdf

§13-123-22 Conditions and restrictions. The following conditions and restrictions shall apply to game mammal hunting in public hunting areas:

(f) With respect to disposition of game, the following conditions and restrictions shall apply:

(4) No person shall sell or offer for sale any game mammal or parts of the carcass of any game mammal taken from any public hunting area.

Not to sure of the exact law but im sure u cannot discharge a firearm with city limits unless at a designated facility or hunting area.  Being that ur in kalihi id be careful.   Trap method works good, live trap that for medium sized to large critters.  U can even rent one at the humane society

Incorrect.  There is no law against discharging a firearm in city limits.

Could it not be construed as reckless endangerment?

You can hunt on private land as long as you get permission from the land owner. You need a hunting license to hunt no matter where you are though. i would think if its your land and if there is a back stop behind the target that is safe to shoot at it would be ok

I'll let the bow hunters I know HUNT on my property, but now that I know pigs (boar) definitely have been in my yard I'll be ready if one presents itself. I have a 400 foot high back stop.

If the bullet leaves your property, sure.

Yes completely legal,
If they have the hunting license and the current yearly stamp. (Which is $10 for residents)

Don't forget, all current stamps expire on June 30th of every year. Regardless of when it was purchased.
