I don't have one myself, but heard it's great if you use a suppressor or hunt.  Other than that I don't see a reason to get one over a 308 or 556 due to less availability and cost.

I've read it's effective range is limited also because of the 5.56 case, it's optimized for subsonic suppressed firearms.

Could easily go out past 300 yards.  It's basically like a 7.62x39 round except shot from a better platform with better ballistics due to using the 308 bullet, with a smaller case.

I went through the same problem deciding if 300BLK would be something I ever need.  I came down on the side of getting a .308 AR-10 instead.

As others said, 300BLK is a great for suppressed because it's subsonic.  But if you just want to have a better hunting rifle than an AR-15, and suppression is not legal, then a .308 makes more sense to me.  Better for hunting, better range, more common/available ammo choices, and you will have two distinct rifles assembled for two distinct purposes.

Another plus is you'll never accidentally load the wrong ammo into the 5.56 upper!  I've read of people accidentally doing that with 300BLK with really bad results!

powder monkey, what kind of powder are you using, did you experiment with different powders? thanks for all the replies, i guess the reason i'm looking at the 300blk is to just try something different, already got ar's in the standard calibers, .556 and .308, it was a toss up between the 300 blk and making one in 9mm, how's that?

The only cons i can think of would be the ammo especially in the island although ive seen more 300blk ammo coming in its still pretty expensive. But if your reloading thats not gonna be a problem. There are a lot of bullets that can be loaded for the 300blk,the cases can be converted into 300blk out of 5.56 easily and the cartridge doesnt take to much powder so its pretty cost effective. The switch over is easy too all that is need to change over from 5.56 to 300blk is a barrel. I built my 300blk about a year and a half ago so i could hunt with a light weight ar15 platform my 300blk rifle weighs slightly over 6.5 lbs which is quite lighter than an ar10. The amount of energy that hits the target is more than enough for the game in the islands.  I have taken pigs and goats with it without a problem, and want to try it out on deer which many people do on the mainland. All in all i think is a good cartridge but thats just me.
check out this video about the 300blk theres some good info and he hits a target out at 750meters like a boss with the 300blk.

1st         a1680
2nd        h110
3rd         imr 4227

if you already reload then no problem. case forming is not really a problem as 223 brass is plentyful. good way to use up 308 bullets stockpiled from years ago.

Its a fun littleround, built an upper about 4 months ago. I used H110 with good results, with the usually H110 problems. Good luck again post some pics!!
