Is your wife a new shooter? I would talk to the RO about it. When I took my daughter shooting for the first time I was right behind her watching her every move ready to intervene if needed.

Bring a target.  RO's won't let you shoot, if you don't have a target.

You can shoot a metal target at 50 yards with a .22LR only.  Metal targets will have to be set at 100 yards for any rifle with a caliber larger than .22LR.

You can also shoot a handgun, along with your rifle.  The handgun must have a scope on it.

You could do what blkdrgn said above, or what I will normally do if I have a full mag waiting when a cease fire is called I will put it in my pocket and take it down range or behind the yellow line with me. I think the main think the RO's would be trying to prevent by not having loaded mags/clips on the bench during the cease fire would be someone being easily able to load and fire a weapon when folks are down range.

Now trying to load more than 5 rounds in a mag, that is a different story: they get after that pretty quick. Ask me how I know, did that the first time I went and never did it again.

Yup brand new shooter.  We've gone through gun function multiple times at home and I'll have her field strip it before we go but I know it's a little different once everything is live.  Since I can stand behind her I think I'll do that.

Shooting the silly side is good fun. Its is privately run, so there is a small fee.(well worth it)

Don't worry about taking it off the stripper clips. I keep my 5.56 loaded on them and just use the speedloader slowly to load 5.

I don't keep them right next to the rifle, but they are plainly visible and on the same table as the firearm. This counts for the silhouette side in addition to the rifle side.
 

YG sells a tall rifle target about 4 ft tall that you can stack about 3 of those square "shoot n see" targets.

My suggestion on target height is about 2/3 of that so it's easier to store in the car. You don't really need it that tall.

I plan to chop mine off to 2/3 the height when I have a chance.

I've had loaded mags on the bench in plain view at the rifle side during cease fire with no comments by RSO. On the pistol side I was told to take the loaded mags off the bench and keep them behind the line during cease fire by RSO.

dogman, good to know. I have never been to the pistol side, only rifle/silhouette.

Never been asked for it. The Kokohead rules state that you can't bring an unregistered post-June 1994 longarm to the range, so technically I wouldn't bring a new purchase to the range before registering it.

I have never seen them check at KHSC. The only place that I have shot at that checked was Waikiki Gun Range. Me personally I would not keep a copy of my registration as issued with my firearms because it has a lot of personally identifiable information on it. I would keep a heavily redacted copy though. With a Name, DOB and SSN you can thief an identity.

Silhouette side is $5 per person.  For rifles, it's .22LR only, and any size caliber for handguns.

As far as building your frame for the rifle side, you can make it any height you want.  Just follow the rifle frame diagram on the KHSC site, and make sure the legs are 12 1/2" on center.  Taper the legs so they are round at the bottom.  You might want to bring a hand planer on your first visit, just in case you need to taper the legs a little more.  There's a target setup by the office where you can check to see if your frame will fit in the holder, before you walk out to the field during a cease fire to set up your target.

RE: new frames:

Make sure your bottom leg frame is rounded off.

Or take a knife with you to make sure the corners of the frame can be whittled down little.
 I take a knife out with me when setting new frames.
Never can be too prepared when putting a square peg into a round hole.

And I haven't been flagged on the rifle side for having loaded mags on the bench during cease fire, but maybe I've just been lucky.
