I got the Sportears custom electronic earplugs.  Basically like a hearing aid that blocks out loud noises.  They are very comfortable and could keep them in all day if I wanted to.  They avoid sweaty ears on hot days.  Sounds great and very useful if you have to teach a class or in combat situations with gunfire around you, and when wearing a helmet.  Downsides is my battery drains after a month of non-use (or maybe I forget to turn them off?), and they cost me $1,000.

$1000 !  And I was thinking the $200 Sordins were expensive.

Howard Leight by Honeywell R-01902 Impact Pro Electronic Shooting Earmuffs

350 hours use on 2 AAA batteries, adjustable sensitivity to low level sound (able to hear conversations), and great protection from the sound of gunfire.  Amplifies people talking up to 4 times actual volume.  Also has an auto-off to save batteries after 4 hours on.

Howard Leight electronic. I forget which model... about $60. Works good.
I like custom mold too, but mine don't fit so good any more. I think I outgrew them. It happens.

Funny, this is exactly what I use. They are slim so they push on your ears a little more than other brands. But I can wear them for hours and never have to take them off.

I also have the custom mold type. And the guy from Maui who made them for me told me as we grow older our ear cavity changes shape so they may become unusable at some time.

I bought a couple of Howard Leight R-01526 Impact Sport Electronic Earmuffs.  But I always carry a handful of those generic foam ear plugs in my car, range bag and tool bag.

Personally, I'd recommend electronic ear protection to everyone who is an avid firearms enthusiast. It is so much easier to hear people talk amidst all the rounds being sent down range and also for safety purposes if an emergency cease fire is called from the lanes further down from you. It gets tiresome sometimes to say things 3+ times to someone who doesn't have electronic ear protection at the range.

I have the Howard Leight R-01526 as well. 40.00 bucks on Amazon and free shipping with Prime. They are awesome. I use to work on the Ramp at ITO and have gone through several different types of hearing protection. I carry a spare pair of the ear plugs with the band around your neck that Hickok45 uses in his youtube vids in my range bag just incase. They worked well on the ramp suppressing the screaming sound of those big jet engines.

I usually use an inexpensive Peltor Bullseye coupled with a set a earplugs. They each provide adequate sound attenuation by themselves but used in conjunction with one another, provide the greatest amount of protection. Your ears (the flappy parts sticking off to the side of your noggin) transmit sound to inner ear so covering them up helps. I use the Peltor and earplugs at the pistol range and rifle range so long as the Peltors don't interfere with the stocks of my rifle. I strip the Peltors off when they do.

I recently purchased a set of Howard Leight Impact Sports and used them at the pistol range. I was a bit disappointed. With an NRR rating of 22 dB, I didn't expect the best sound attenuation but I expected something better than what I experienced. The ear pads are slim and that feature detracts from the earmuff's ability to form-seal around eye glass frames. Sound is allowed to pass through the small gaps inbetween the pads, eyeglass frame and the wearer's head.  There is a noticeable difference in sound attenuation when wearing glasses or protective lenses and without. The HL's work much better with ear plugs installed but that seems contra to the reason why one would buy an electronic earmuff in the first place. You can still enjoy the features of the HL, however, if you turn the sound levels all the way up.

I plan on experimenting with the use of sound deadening foam on the inside of the HL's or adhesive insulation like Dynamat to see if that helps.  If that helps, I foresee another DIY youtube video  :shake:
