Which weapon is the ideal home defense weapon?

Just another poll to get the discussion started.

If you'd like, you can give your reasons for your choice.

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

I choose rifle since it is theoretically possible to have 30 round magazine parts laying around the house.  Pistols are great to, it all depends. Who / what I am defending against or if I expected the threat or it surprised me.

I chose double-barrel shotgun. Looks better when it's plastered all over the news. lol. Doubt I'd need more than 2 rounds of buckshot for defense of my small home, but if I do, it'd make a very good club  :geekdanc:

Even if there is more than one invader, the usual behavior when you offer resistance or shoot their buddy is run away. Really I think a double-barrel is adequate for HD. Plus, if it's zombies you're defending your home from, you'll look stylish when you die because you were already too far unprepared

I'd probably say a semi-auto pistol is the best. They are small and you can keep them by the bedside if you need to. They also hold quite a few rounds that open big holes.

A short barreled shotgun would be good too. Maybe something with a 10-14" barrel and a matching mag tube.

I don't think you can say there is a "the best."  I think there are always circumstances that make one (or more) choice a better one than another.  What's good in one in one situation may be horrible in another one.

Samurai sword with laser sight with automatic grenade launcher and 3-burst minelayer. And a microwave. I might get hungry as I wait in my ceiling for an intruder.

That'll be $37.00 plus additional charges of  $0.50 per punctuation, $0.75 per conjunction, and $2.00 per emoticons.  Oh and the "hahaha" will cost you an additional $1.00 per "Ha" :P

I voted for the pump shotgun simply because in Hawaii our homes are built in close proximity to one another.  The risk of over-penetration in a home defense situation is significantly greater than on the mainland.  You could shoot somebody with a pistol or rifle and have the round go through him, your wall, and then your neighbors wall because your neighbor's house is only 20ft away from yours.  Shotgun rounds will lose velocity much quicker than one solitary bullet, reducing the risk significantly.  And of course the overall effectiveness of shotgun rounds at close range, not to mention the multitude of differenttypes of ammunition you can shoot all through one shotgun makes it ideal for home defense.

A semi-auto shotgun would probably be more effective because of sheer firepower, but it may screw you in the court case to follow.  All the prosecution has to do is show one of those youtube videos of someone going off with a Saiga 12 or AA12, and they'll say "See!  Look what this weapon is capable of and what this person used on my client!  He used extreme and excessive force!"  Also police standard issue shotgun (as far as I know) is a pump and not a semi-auto, so the "I only used what the LEO's use" will not work with a semi-auto shotgun.

Either way, any gun for home defense is better than no gun at all.

Again, a poll without my prime choice.  I'd go for a lever action, pistol-caliber carbine. Wait, what am I saying... I USE a .357 magnum lever action.  Short overall length, so good maneuverability in the confines of the house.  Increased accuracy over a handgun means my bad guys fall down and stay down while my neighbors don't have to dodge stray bullets.  Holds enough ammo to get the job done 2-3 times over.  Incredibly simple to operate, clear, and make safe.  And it also makes an effective club.

How about an M1 carbine?
Short OAL, .357 magnum ballistics, accurate at short range, easy reloads, looks less menacing than a 'black rifle' for when the police come, and great club if need be.

.45 semi pistol.  .45 is a known manstopper, .45 is a fat and relatively slow round.  It will not penetrate far if shooting through walls.

My choice is an old SP101 loaded with .357 glaser rounds. It's reliable and with the way homes are built around here anything more would likely go through interior walls.

Realistically though, if I got my family out...shooting someone would be a last resort. Nothing I have is worth someones life and I can do without the hassle of facing BS charges or a civil suit. We all know how messed up the system is around here. A "jury of your peers" would bitch about how you should've run or go on about how the intruder wasn't armed (if it's so).  That is unless the jury pool happens to be 2A members right?  :D

I was just thinking of starting a poll like this but I'm a novice so I didn't. Except I would have added wacky options besides firearms.

I vote for a cell phone (something I never carry; I don't even know my own number) because I am a chicken. Then you can hide and call the police.

Also, I experienced a home invasion several years ago and learned the hard way that if you catch the BG before he entered your home you get stuck in an awkward situation unless you have a cell phone to call the police. If the BG already entered your home then no problem, just use home phone, but I didn't want to show the BG what the inside of my house is like.

A short barreled shotgun would be good too. Maybe something with a 10-14" barrel and a matching mag tube.

Aren't these illegal?

Yes, short barreled shotguns are illegal in Hawaii and NFA items nationally.
