I used to give money to my Church and direct the Dollar Deacon (Treasurer) to give it to the needy of my choice, whom or which I had checked out, without getting my name involved.
And I knew exactly what my Pastor made. Sometimes I'd gift him, but it was hard to hide that fact.
In those inescapable United Way (UW) campaigns at work, I used to give a buck, just to avoid having my department show less than 100% participation. Then I found out that one could donate specifically to the NRA through United Way by using the earmarking codes you could request from the UW volunteer*,
Knowing how much was skimmed by United Way "administrative costs," I still only gave a buck, but I felt like I was making a statement.
