Powder Shortage
« on: June 04, 2014, 02:37:40 PM »
I just took a look at Powder Valley's powder inventory. Zero, zilch, nada.  Seems like its been that way forever. LGS are faring no better (maybe except for WGS  ;D ). I querried Google for the reason for the shortage of powder and stumbled on this article which made me even more depressed. http://bearingarms.com/think-the-ammo-market-is-about-to-get-better-think-again/. Looks lik things are going to be dry for at least a couple of years. I've got a nice supply of pistol powder but nothing for rifle so I'm thinking of limiting my shooting to pistols and military surplus rifles for which mil surp ammo is readily available (do I hear the word, "Mosin"?). Either that or shelving the firearms for several seasons and taking up a new hobby like underwater basket weaving. Do you reloaders have the same problem or do you have a source for powder?

For me, powder has been an on again off again issue. I check all the LGS's for their inventory of powder at least once every two weeks or so. When one gets some in I go down with my list of alternates and buy what I need. I have a decent supply of powder for most of my rifles and pistols. The problem for me are the new additions to my safe for which I have no or little powder I can use. So I research my books and the Internet and came up with a full list of substitutes I can use. I keep it a copy in my car and on my phone. When I see something I can use I buy at least 1 or 2 pounds. If they let me buy more I will. And if there is a popular powder that I find that I don't like or can use (like 4895) I buy it any way and trade it with some friends. I bought a bunch of H110 from SEC when they got a ton of it in a while back. I couldn't use it. I traded it for something I could use. So I was down to my last two pounds and all of the sudden I came across a new toy that it is perfect for. But now I only have 2 pounds of it. So that is what I do. I missed out on X-Rings' recent sale on Unique. I was working 14 hours that day. I have plenty of uses for Unique. I know I could have traded that for something else as well. Anyone who didn't pick some up that day missed out.

I have some Varget I could let go in a trade for something similar to H110/I4227. Let me know what you might be willing to trade for? Maybe we can start up a powder trading thread. I have other powder to trade as well including the all allusive black powder.

Made my rounds last weekend and found WGS still has a small amount of powders that I couldn't use or already have enough of. I did see they had 3 pounds of BLC-2 so my buddy bought two of them. BLC-2 is one of those powders I get excellent results from. They didn't have Varget, Titegroup, H335, H4895. But they did have H4350, Some IMR powders and Ramshot powders.

Young Guns also just recently received a pallet (100 pounds) of powder. They don't have a lot but they still had a few very common types such as H4895. They are only allowing 1 pound per type per day.

Hope this helps everyone!!!  :shaka:

Powder Valley has IMR4985 back in stock - one pounders only.  They currently have 400 bottles - I just called them to see if they have any other powders, but she said the website is up to date so SOL.

You can buy only 50 pounds for hazmat fee $350.00.

There are a handful of online retailers like Third Generation ShootingSupply selling 8 lbs. kegs of powder like IMR4064 but Alaska and Hawaii are "countries" it doesn't ship to.

Anyone know of any gun shop on the mainland that has a motherload of powder or primers?  I requested a quote from a freight forwarder to move 50 pounds of either as it seems that these online resellers are out of stock of everything, but local gun shops have supply.

I'll be on the mainland (SoCal) in early July. I'll report back when I find how things are on the mainland.

Powder Valley briefly (around two hours) had VV N320 in stock.  The 4 pounders went out of stock within 20 minutes and the 1 pounders are now out of stock . . .

They appear to be getting more powder & primer back in stock, albeit not the more popular ones like Varget & Federal GMM.

Gotta pounce when it is in stock.  Next time . . .

Hey Wirecounter I sent you an e-mail.

Any good all around pistol powder like VV N320 you can count me in for. I don't need it but I'll take 4 one pounders if it comes up again. When it comes to powder shortages it is better to be safe than sorry.  I am surprised others didn't jump on this.

I just came back from Young Guns at Mapunapuna. Currently, their stock of gun powers are also very limited, I did see IMR 4198 ($37.99 per 1# bottle (3 bottles left showing)) and also HOGDON H4198 ($37.99 per 1# bottle (3 bottles)) they also had HOGDON 50 and I think 4180? and a couple other IMR like IMR 7828SSC and IMR 4007 SSC and VIHTAVUORI powders.
