"Never shoot someone else's reloads" and "Never offer up your reloads to someone else"

I was given this advice back when I first started reloading. Here has been my experience over the years....

I was reloading 9mm over 30 years ago and using 90gr Sierra Bullets. They worked fine in my gun but jammed in my father's guns and my brother's gun. They didn't want to try my 115gr and 124gr reloads after that. I never could figure out why? LOL

I was reloading .357 over 30 years ago and a friend offered to let me shoot his Marlin lever action in .357. Of course I figured it couldn't hurt to use my reloads. They worked great in my revolver. Turns out I needed to put more crimp on my reloads if I was going to use them in a lever action. Had to pay the gunsmith to un jam my friend's lever gun. I swore I would never allow my reloads to be used in any other guns but my own ever again.

My father reloaded about 20k 9mm rounds in 115gr and 124gr Sierra Bullets with new brass before he died. They were all in coffee cans. I tried a few in my guns and found that some shot light and some shot heavy. I took a few apart and found the powder charges were all over the place and not what he had written on the tags. There was one I found with a larger charge than my books recommend. Glad I didn't shoot any more.

My friend offered some reloads to me to shoot in my gun. A very soft load of 5.7gr of Unique in 45 Colt. I turned him down. Later that day he blew his gun up with one he had accidentally double charged.

Last but not least. I have a friend who reloads for over 40 different cartridges. He has been reloading longer than I have and is well respected by me and by my peers regarding his reloading knowledge and skill. One day I purchased an old military rifle in a oddball cartridge. When I told him I was looking for brass and bullets for it he offered to sell me an extra set of dies and gave me 50 of his favorite reloads. He told me to keep the brass. I inspected the dies and found them totally corroded and almost unusable AFTER I paid him. Glad I got them cheap. I was able to clean them up and make them acceptable for use. I should have known better but I shot all the reloads that same day without inspecting the shell casings before and after. When I got them home I noticed 5 or 6 cases had split necks. After sizing them 24 out of the 50 had split necks. After mentioning this to him he told the following. You have a battle rifle. It is no big deal if the case neck is split before or after it is fired. Yikes!!!! I never heard him say anything like this before. Then he went on and said he routinely uses cases with split necks in his battle rifles. And he only throws the case away if it won't hold a bullet any more.

I still hear those words of wisdom ring through my head....

That might just be the worst idea I've heard in awhile... or he's lying to you.

I never shoot someone elses reloads in my guns.

I never offer my reloads unless they shoot them in my guns.

I never buy reloads at gun shows.
