Original Title:" Sheriff: Local cops need MRAPs because America has turned into 'war zone'"

"Military surplus can save departments a lot of money. In Franklin’s case, Cox estimated, it paid about $5,000 for its MRAP. The government paid $733,000 when it was new."

Sure, I will take one.  Just wondering do I need insurance for it ?  (well consider it is almost indistrucable in a civilian enviorment, no need replacement insurance right? )

On a serious note, guess this is where taxpayer $$$ went.  A 728000 discount. ( And my former unit still trainning with old un-armored 998/1025s).

Hey, our taxpayer dollars at work! According to the article below, apparently no town is too small to be given one of these vehicles in order to combat the local "domestic terrorists". Maybe Pahoa should acquire one of these in case they need to go out on one of those dangerous raids where they dig up five cannabis plants from a dreadlocked stoner... I've seen all those articles about how many mines and ambushes the narcs have encountered when out on those raids. Oh, my mistake, never happened. But they should be prepared, just in case... they have plenty of our money, so maybe buy two! >:(

Congratulations! Your tiny town has an MRAP and is ready for war

Here at The Watch, we’re looking for the smallest town in America to acquire an MRAP, or Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected armored personnel vehicle.
For the past few years, the Pentagon has been giving these vehicles to police departments across the country. The unwieldy behemoths have little real application in domestic police work.

But we want to find the tiniest town in America whose police force will be protected from any potential insurgent uprising. So far, the leading contender is Dundee, Mich., a sprawling metropolis of 3,900 people.

Do you classify everybody based on the state they live in, the political party they register with and the job they have?

I wonder what that makes the rest of us ... living in a BLUE state like the People's Republic of Hawaii?

Shrug.

I mostly classify people by the ideology they preach (and how consistent they are with it), and this dude is a racist cracker who's just waiting for all them poor folks to start pouring out of the cities and trying to rape white women.

Hey, if we're going to play the stereotype game, might as well go all the way....

  I guess I have to break this down somewhat for you to understand. At nowhere in this post did I state that the sheriff is or a part of Obama's Gestapo. I don't know and I will not assume that sheriff is right winged and or Republican. The topic is 5k for M.R.A.P.  According to the article 5k is for shipping the M.R.A.P. is pretty much free. So the bottom line is if the government is going to give these things away for free soon every state is going to have at least 1 M.R.A.P. The question is do we really need M.R.A.P.'s in our towns? My opinion is "absolutely not ".
Again I 'm not going to assume anything and I pray to God this isn't going to happen but if one day the government turns tyrannical or they decide to disarm the citizens these things are going to placed all around this country. The current administration "Obama"has already expressed these traits.
Be safe and take care :shaka:

A rural town with a population of under 14,000 needs an armored vehicle?

Does that mean that big cities like New York and Los Angeles need an M1 tank? Maybe they should get some grenade launchers and mortars so they can stand off and pound drug dealers from a safe distance.
Makes sense to me. Especially considering the Federal DOE needs a swat team to protect us from kids that bite pop tarts into the shape of a gun.
Hello kitty bubble guns? Don't even go there, we're at war and these malcontents must be crushed.

Yep, the EPA NEEDS those armored vehicles, swat teams and snipers. How else do you expect them to protect endangered gophers?

If you believe any of this I've got some stock in a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell you.

I don't understand why parking would be a problem ...

for the other drivers maybe, but not you!!

I know, an MRAP is not a tank, but a tank would be cool, too!

I would rather have a military grade hummer.  Not best in comfort but it served me well during OIF 1.  We drove nonstop from Tikrit to Camp Doha in less than 18 hours without any issues. I wonder when those vehicles will become surplus?

Hawaii gets 1 M.R.A.P. according to this article

http://news.yahoo.com/as-wars-wind-down--small-town-cops-inherit-armored-vehicles-233505138.html
The linked county chart shows Honolulu county as having 3.

From the article: "... SWAT teams are predominantly being used to raid private homes in search of drugs."

Yeah, thanks to the right-wing nanny-staters who know better than you that if you consume cannabis you ought to be imprisoned, but at the same time don't enforce laws to keep the several-times-convicted alcoholic drunks off the roads. These anti-freedom criminalization of victimless "crimes" meddlers should have their pictures in dictionaries next to the word "hypocrite". And you'd better not engage in any gambling, or offer to exchange something of value for any sexual acts with another consenting adult, or you know, prison for you! But feel free to go to any store and buy all the tobacco products you want that end up costing literally billions of dollars per year in health care costs that raise my insurance rates. Hypocrites! Enjoy your f-ing MRAP! :geekdanc:  :stopjack:

You are aware the State of Hawaii's lawmaking body, the Legislature, has been predominately Democrat controlled since 1963, right?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the laws you are complaining about are mostly local laws, not federal.  And the local laws are created by the majority of Democrats in the Hawaii State Legislature.

Show me what I'm not seeing here!

Today, the Hawaii Senate has 24 Democrats and 1 Republican.  The House has 44 Democrats and 7 Republicans.

If the laws, as you state, are the result of right-wing, nanny-stater hypocrites, why hasn't the left-wing majority in the legislature repealed the laws?  They've had control since 1963.....what the f*** are they waiting on?

Colorado and Washington are already making changes there on marijuana laws.  Why not Hawaii?

As for gambling, that measure is brought up and defeated almost every legislative term.  Right-wing?  Please!!     :wtf:

I was referring specifically to the laws maintaining illegal status for cannabis, gambling, and sex workers. I'm sure you wouldn't assert that had the party affiliations been reversed for the past 50 years that those listed items would now be legal? If this is truly the leftist paradise, why are those things still illegal? Why haven't they repealed those laws? Honestly, I can't explain it, given the other leftist nanny-state policies currently in place (see: CCW laws, firearm "registration", highest welfare payments in the U.S., "excessive" business regulation, absurd "environmental" regulations, etc.). Certainly the current policies of plea-bargaining and of allowing repeat criminal offenders to return to committing criminal acts (including drunk driving) again and again and again is reflective of the leftist view that people are somehow not responsible for their behavior and don't really need to be held accountable.

I doubt hardly any of the politicians from either party have the courage, even if they had the belief, to stand up and advocate for individual liberty and to get the government out of our private lives. There are a lot of jobs and tons of money at stake. That, and of course they don't believe in personal liberty anyway. Well, not for us "regular" folks anyway. You think any of those people are going to stand up in public and on principle state that the government ought to have no role whatsoever in the affairs of consenting adults? Not gonna happen, not even by the politicians that frequent prostitutes.

The theoretical dividing line between which political party wants to deny citizen liberty in what area generally runs (in most places on the mainland that I am aware of) as I described... with the left-wing nanny-staters wanting to control/deny citizen access to firearms, and freedom of choice for supposed environmental concerns (car mileage requirements, "green" building codes, hundreds of millions of dollars in subsidies for preferred corporations (e.g. Solyndra); for supposed health concerns (bans on trans-fats, soda size, smoking; government mandated health care, etc.); coercive business practices ("green" codes, minimum wage requirements, requirements which may violate one's personal beliefs, etc.), and more. There are some areas of overlap, where agreements amongst left and right occur, and disagreements occur within each camp: Is Snowden a traitor or a patriot? Is spying on everyone all the time good/useful or not? Etc.

Yeah, here in Hawaii, we have the worst of both worlds in that we have an almost unanimous leftist majority that has gone past the "normal" party dictates to the realm of Big Brother (which could be seen as either very far left or very far right), wherein they want to control virtually everything that ought to be the personal prerogative of private citizens in their private lives. I really have no hypothesis as to why Hawaii's leftist legislators would not have taken more steps to,say, legalizing cannabis... except they they appear to want to control our choices in as many ways as they can, yet they do have the leftist nanny-state mind set when it comes to denial of most liberties asserted by conservatives. They seem to want to have "control" over most things, though they certainly fall in with the party line with most issues... it's just they go even beyond that to be more controlling where the normal leftist philosophy would dictate "personal choice" (e.g. cannabis).

Thus my preference for those that lean libertarian, where personal freedom and liberty is the basis for establishing principles and formulating policy.

If you have a hypothesis to explain the seeming contradiction, I'd like to hear it.

If you have a hypothesis to explain the seeming contradiction, I'd like to hear it.

Or: Back to topic!

It's not a hypothesis, it's merely facts of politics.

Ask yourself who gains by keeping gambling out of Hawaii?
Perhaps businesses who would be competing for the entertainment/visitor industry labor?
Investors who have money in Vegas properties?
Travel industry who makes God knows how much shuttling Hawaii vacationers to Vegas and back daily.
A city manager who can't maintain the infrastructure we need now, let alone the massive toll casinos and the extra visitors might create.
A Legislature who believes they know better what is good for the individual Hawaiians than the Hawaiians do.  Age old arguments:  gambling addiction, increased property crime, other social ills caused by easy access to gaming.
Contributions to campaign war chests by special interest groups who have an interest in seeing the laws lean one way or the other.

Now substitute "marijuana" in place of "gambling", and the majority of the above questions are still relevant with little to some adjustment.

Not really trying to add much, but a real left-right view is more like the pic below. You can decide where Democrats and Republicans fit in.

I am not a lawyer.
