My wife and I watch our grandson and great-grandson full time Mon-Fri and sometimes even weekends.

The only happy times I have nowadays in retirement.

Seems like the rest of the world we live in is going to shiite.

Seems like the baby jumped 3 feet into the air and landed on mommy after someone fired their high powered rifle.

Baby: "Mommy, I got scared......."

Mommy:  "What?!!  Huh?!!  Wat you said???......."

Metallic silhouette still not open yet...if that's what you're asking about. Pretty soon though.

Public:  What's the hold-up?

City and County:  What do you mean "what's the hold-up?"  Excellent progress is being made to facilitate state of the art technology and innovations to all aspects of the facility.  When all is completed, the City will waste no time in opening it to the public for all to enjoy.........yada yada yada blah blah blah etc. etc. etc.............

Public:  Oh yeah.  I forgot.  City and County......... ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

I was at the bay next to this one where the fire started.  Our group was at a cease fire due to going over instructions for the next exercise.  Then we noticed smoke and the RSO in charge on our side got on the phone to notify 911 and the range master.  We were told to evacuate the area. None of us had time to put our firearms away where we were parked next to the bay.  So some of us stopped by the rifle side to put our firearms away due to HI laws and you cannot open carry/car carry or put your firearms away off property.

While driving away toward HK, we could see the smoke go all the way to Hanauma Bay area.  Which is why the road was shut down due to poor visibiity.

Here's what I think will happen next.

Due to the hot topic of wild fires, the range will be closed until a brush fire expert can do an assessment.  Then another expert will have to examine what precautions can be taken to avoid this.  Since there are no fire hydrants at the range and the water fountain at the bay doesn't even work, it will be:

Cut the dead/dry vegetation and maintain it.

Water the vegetation to keep it green, which means to install more water lines.

Combo of both.

This would mean the range itself will be shut down and maybe the rifle/handgun side possibly be open later while the bays remain closed.

The only saving grace would be that HPD uses the bays.

I hope I'm wrong for the above.

IDK what kind of ammo was being used that started the fire as the berm was blocking my view.  But using tracers is not allowed.  And since it began on the mountain, i highly doubt someone was smoking and able to flick their cig that far up. IDK what group was in that bay either.

Million(s) dollar safety assessment and consultation from a mainland firm.

Then a city council special meeting to assess the assessment and consult each other on the consultation.

Then an approval of the recommendation of the mainland firm's assessment and consultation after consulting the finance committee as to how they can use taxpayers money to pay for their special session and the firm's fees.

After some push back from certain "special interest" groups and years of back and forth bullsh*t, it will be deemed that the whole fricken crater be converted to a pickle ball court and overflow parking for the more profitable Hanauma Bay tourist trap.

All this is just my pure speculation, of course, with no evidence to back up anything except my observations in the past watching things unfold when it comes to City and County. ::)

I dunno what happened, but could be a few possibilities.
Could be someone having a ND into the brush on the side berm and burning powder set it off.  Or someone was shooting steel plates with steel bullets near the brush.  Or non-firearm related reason.

I always have two fire extinguishers on the range when I RSO.  People think I'm paranoid but....

Last week, there was a notice that the dry conditions and higher winds this weekend significantly increased the risk of brush fires in Hawaii.

A simple spark from any bullet hitting any rock, piece of metal (like a target stand pipe), etc. could have caused it.  It only takes air, fuel and heat to start a fire.

could a head be hot enough to start a fire?  I know I've had 2nd degree burns with brass, but it never just stays as I do the wiggle to move it.  Maybe 3rd degree burns if you let the hot brass stay in 1 spot.

If the kindling and conditions are right (hot, dry day with gentle breezes), something as small as a spark of static electricity can start it.  Stronger winds mean that once it's started, conditions favor it spreading faster if plenty of fuel (dry plant material) is present.

Then you have to think about accelerants.  Each time a shot is fired, combustible powder is expelled along with the projectile.  Not all off it is burned, so if over time, a small amount of powder accumulated where the ignition point is, that powder could help get things started.  I figure most of the powder is washed away when it rains, but it's been very dry lately.  Just a thought.
