Everyone says 2 weeks, but really think about this, we r in the middle of oceans, if the harbor and airport gets knock out, how much supplies SHOULD we have on hand any given day?

supply for food, water, etc. is in "just in time" inventories. stores order general merchandise weekly from local or mainland distributors and base their stock on product movement /shipping times. based on that and any panic that sets in for a run on supplies............we're screwed. i'd go with at least a month.   :shaka:

I see there being different levels of readiness.

2 weeks- Should be the bare minimum.  This would be for things like power outages, hurricanes, or some sort of localized emergency where going to the store is no loner an option
1 month- For severe weather based emergency that causes disruption of supply lines and requires short term rebuilding of infrastructure.
3 months- For dire emergency that see longer term disruption of outside support and long term rebuilding.  Martial law, social unrest etc...
1 year- A long term state of emergency due to economic depression, hostile uprising or any sort of really, really bad thing.
Indefinite- Long term survival after complete society collapse.

What level you want to prepare for is up to you, and your financial considerations.  But two weeks is often touted as the minimum because it is the mot likely. Personally, I prefer the three month mark, because it gives m more wiggle room because I keep a rotating stock of many of my prep foods.

Here is my somewhat generalization of the preps as far as food goes. Of course their will be carryover, and should be diversity in your preps.

2 weeks-  Pre cooked, ready to eat food will probably be the easiest.  This means canned food and MREs.  Stuff that doesn't need to be cooked or hydrated, just heated. Also non perishables such as peanut butter and such.

1 month- Everything from the 2 week mark + prepackaged emergency meals.  Stuff like mountain house,  ramen noodles, and those emergency buckets.

3 months- Everything listed before, just more of it.  Plus bulk dry items stored accordingly. Rice, beans etc...

1 year- Everything listed before... just more of it.  Things that would be additions that should not be overlooked is salt, seasonings, cooking oil, and even multivitamins.

Indefinite- I hope you're ready to start growing your own food.

Water storage, collection and purification is a whole other story.

It really does not take much money to put away a bare minimum of food for 2 weeks if you are not a picky eater.  A trip to Costco will cover that and more in most circumstances. A 20lb bag of rice, 2 cases of ramen, a case of canned tuna, a case of spam or Vienna sausage, a few cases of bottled water and a 2 pack of those big jars of peanut butter may not be the most nutritious food stores.... but they are enough to live on for most emergencies.

I got about 6 weeks of Dry Food Mixes, Feeze Dried, Mountain House and MREs. What I don't have enough of, is water, maybe only 2 weeks. Unless were given a notice like a Hurricane, then I could fill all my bathtub containers.

I have a few weeks worth; which isn't that difficult really (any normal pantry probably has that much).

Much beyond that it becomes more expensive and difficult to plan (e.g. if you garden you need to protect it from theft). If society truly breaks down then I'd favour mobility normally, but here on Oahu there's really nowhere to go.

I don't think subsistence hunting is very viable in a longterm SHTF here once you have everyone trying to do it. Intensive gardening and communal defense seems the only viable strategy here for something lasting longer than weeks-months. On neighbour islands hunting seems a bit more realistic, but not Oahu.

Pigs reproduce pretty quickly, but assuming there's no gas available, how are you going to transport yourself and the carcass? Are you setup to preserve the meat since you won't have refrigeration? Also if you get injured you'll probably die from infection. It's assuming a lot of risk for the possibility that you will not get anything and/or it may be stolen from you once you do.

I think my area I am able to grow food, the stream is less then 50 yards from my back yard, I already have a few pants going, 8 papaya plants ( anyone some? ) etc plants ,chickens I have taps a few of them b4, getting a pig would be best, I do have a smoker, and could feed more ppl, I have seen pen like taps that could be made, that way better way of getting them rather, goin out nd getting hurt

Best way of gettin chickens is to fine them at nite in trees and if u got a clean shot use a bow nd arrow or a bb/ .22cal rifle or set line/ feet noose if u want then alive

Water is the kicker.

Know where you're gonna get your water from.

Rat traps with a little bit of dog food make great dove traps.  and it just snaps the neck so no meat damage.

Not too difficult to rig a catchment system. Some $$ required to install a tank, but if you have gutters, it's pretty easy to install the filters and what not. We used to have a catchment system in Micronesia. Big concrete tank with a simple filter setup. As long as you keep it covered, the risk of contamination is pretty low and you can easily setup a toilet float valve system to keep it full of mains water.

For additional $$ you can install a UV system for your kitchen to purify your drinking water (whole house not worth it IMO). As long as you have PV it's pretty low maintenance. Or you can just boil.

The way you protect your garden is simple: grow crops that are weeds and easily propagated and extremely nutritious  (like amaranthus and dandelion) and you wont need to worry because people wont know what it is and/or it is so easy to grow, so you have no problem sharing or giving seed to other people to grow their own.

Rabbits breed faster than pigs, and chickens act as a compost generator, soil tiller and meat/egg source year round, so no need for pigs unless easily accessible in your area.

Dandelion tea is not bad, but I wouldn't say you can really live off the greens. Good for vitamins, but calories not so much. Plus variety is really important for morale in an extended situation. Eating the same thing all the time gets old really fast. Don't underestimate the mental impact of small things like that.

2000 (or more) calories a day, per person.  That's about 1/5 acre of sweet potatoes or taro for a year's worth of calories, or 700sq ft a week, every week.  Living on greens is for animals with more than one stomach.

OTOH, if you have enough rice and beans stored, fresh greens will supply enough vitamins to keep you healthy.

I'm not worried about finding food in a pinch.  I found a cool recipe online that turns high-energy plankton into a green-tinted wafer.  it's a great source of protein!!

Look up the Soylent Corporation ...
