Hawaii Kai NB Meeting
« on: July 30, 2014, 10:27:58 PM »
I don't how interested anyone is in this anymore as the range hasn't been on the agenda in the last few months ( thankfully ).

I missed the May meeting due to being preoccupied with getting things in order for the new job I recently started, my apologies.

I did, however, make the June and July meetings. I didn't post on last months meeting due to, again, getting used to the new work schedule.

That being said I'll get down to business. I'm going to dispense with the reports from HPD, HFD, BOWS, etc. from this time forward unless it's relevant. If this is of great interest to you, you can check out the meeting minutes as they are published on the HK board website or  watch the meeting on Olelo.

As we're in an election year, the board has been preoccupied with providing a forum for candidates in the district to present their platforms to the public. Last month it was City council.
I'll give you my impressions of the candidates.

Natalie Iwasa: HK board member, CPA, obvious "do gooder". The most striking impression she made on me was mentioning she felt something needed to be done about "the stray bullets" coming from the range. This, in spite of the fact that no determination has been made by HPD as to where the bullet(s) came from. I vote NO.

Trevor Ozawa: Lawyer, cares about HK, repeated this many times. Struck me as a typical self serving politician. Again, I vote NO.

Carl Strouble: No occupation given. Says he's tired of taxes. Struck me as an amateur, but his heart seems to be in the right place. MAYBE

Tom Waters: Another lawyer, former politician representing Waimanalo-Kailua, trying to get back in so he can pay for his kids to go to Iolani (his words). NO

As usual, there are no really outstanding choices. With the exception of Mr. Strouble, it seems to be just another turd polishing contest.

On to the July meeting.

The board members nominated each other for the positions they already hold, amazingly, they all made it. Sub district 9 now has a representative, Lisa Lockheart or Lokert (guess I'll find out at the next meeting). However Gene Tierney has resigned his position in district 8, so they're still down a member. The interesting thing about this is that when the new member was sworn in, She took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America and the laws of this country. Also to uphold the State constitution. I would imagine they all took the same oath........

The State Representatives were up this month.

Chris Stump (D) is running against Gene Ward. The young Mr. Stump is an enviropuke, cause marcher who's been making a living off of our taxes by doing "studies" and "making recommendations". I don't think he stands much of a chance against the very eloquent environmentally aware Gene Ward. An easy choice.

This is the interesting race. Incumbent Mark Hashem (D) is being challenged by newcomer Susan Halverson (R). If you've read any of my past HK board posts you'll know that my opinion of Mr. Hasham is not good. He generally doesn't show up for meetings and the one time he did his info on the subject at hand was incorrect and he beat a hasty retreat.

I took the opportunity to speak with her about 2A issues. Yes, she does support the 2nd Amendment. No she doesn't own her own firearm, but her husband does and she goes to the range with him. Yes, she does support concealed carry and right of the people to defend themselves. This is quite refreshing in a state candidate and I plan to look into her platform further as time allows.

Tim Houghton, the Mayors Rep. said that the Mayors priority in the area is parks. I won't bore you with the details, but the range was NOT mentioned. I did take the opportunity to speak with him and follow up with him regarding the hiker incident at the range to see if anything was being done. He took my e-mail and said he'd get back to me. We'll see.

Oh! You'll be happy to know that Governor Gnome Alwayscruddy is happily releasing our money to the legislature to spend as they see fit!

Well, that's about it for this edition. Eternal vigilance being the price to keep our freedoms, I will be here for the duration.

Hey guys, sorry about the strike through. I don't know what happened there. Thanks for the save mauidog!

That's OK Mac, I'll see you at the GTG. BTW, I noticed Ron Livingston wasn't in attendance again [?].

Thank you very much edster.  I had a feeling there was no one to pick from for the city council seat, especially with the one who helped kill medical tort reform years ago among the candidates (Tommy Waters).  If he really wants to send his kids to Iolani maybe he should start off by not sending so much junk mail.  It's like I get a campaign flyer from him every other day now.

Who killed tort reform?

I'm on my phone so I can't cut and paste a link, but google "tommy waters medical tort reform" and there should be a hawaii news now story by leland kim from 2008.  Waters was the House Judiciary Chair that year and according to the story did not bring the proposed bill up for discussion intentionally.
