What's the weather like... really?
« on: August 08, 2014, 10:37:02 AM »
Local (Denver) weather channel is making it sound like the Islands are going to be washed or blown away.  I understand some flooding on BI's and Maui's east coasts, but they're showing a (one) tree down, some breezes, and some streams with brown water and white foam... yet nothing to match the hysterical tones of the reporters.

So what's up?  Is it just the contrast between Hawaii's normally mild weather and a moderate rainstorm that's making the reporters get all excited?

Excitement makes money!  Lol.

We aren't out of the woods yet, and all reports are not in so not sure what the extent of the damage is.  I believe most on this site are ready for whatever action might be encountered.   Prayers, especially for BI,  that damages are minor.

Thank you Terry!  :shaka:

A good thing to know is, with everyone glued to the tv, all those politicians' ads are being viewed by many many people...  haha. Seems like that is the only ads they have been playing.  Lol

A category 4 hurricane was heading towards us. It weakened to a cat1/tropical storm before landfall and clipped one of the islands. Now its passing south of us.
Right behind it, arriving Sunday or so, is a category 2 hurricane, last I heard, but its suppose to pass to the north of us they predicting.

Ah, OK, they've been talking about HI "getting hit with a double whammy" and "first time in XX years"  for the last couple of days, so I've been watching the weather channel.  I guess it's bad, but not as bad as they make it sound.  Anyone hurt so far?

I think the tv crews went to the wrong locations last night. Maybe it was too dangerous for them to go into the Puna area and see the ocean coming out of some driveways and onto the main road in Kapoho. Then be stuck in there after trees fell to block what little escape roads they have.

I live in Puna and finally made it out late today.  Road was blocked with fallen trees.  Have to go back in a while but based on the # of downed power poles, I will not have power for a few weeks.  Bummer, but at least work has power and internet.  Saw lots of damaged homes and the power lines are all over the roads.  Actually saw some HELCO people out there today too.  No equipment yet, only clipboards.  That was one mean storm.  No thunder or lightning but plenty rain and the wind was so loud you could hear it coming.  The ocean too was pounding!  I feel really lucky after seeing some of the damage today.  I have a small dent in my roof from a tree that fell in my yard and that is it.
It is what it is.

OK, thanks.   Interesting point about how the news crews might not be able to get into the really bad areas. Well, hope youse guys are all OK, and my sympathy for those who had damage.

It's just that I didn't quite trust the reporting and wondered if it was exaggerated.  I guess not.

THANKS !

Terry
