Wife said she saw a rat outside.  I grabbed my Tavor.  She was not impressed.

I bet the rat would have been.
Neighbors not so much though!

Damn that's a lot of rats. What you been feeding them?

You see those trash cans they are running behind?  That be their personal smorgasbord.  About 15 section 8 units keep 'em refilled.

We had a rat problem at our house that was building over the past 10 years; my family seems to have inherited the pack-rat gene.

Anyway, picked up some TomCat poison and some cheap poison housing things, and now we are essentially rat free and have been for the past 6 months. Still a few mice and loner rats here and there, but no more scratching in the ceilings or torn up packages anymore.

Only problem is that if they die in an area you frequent and in which you can't find them, the smell will linger for about 2-3 days until the poison finishes drying them out.

Overall, I think an investment for less than $30 ($15 for the trap, $15 for the bait) is well worth wiping out whatever colony has been on this property.

I do believe someone started poisoning then a while back since suddenly the big population disappeared.  There was a period of ~3-4 weeks (I could look back through thread to find out exactly how long) where I hardly saw any.  They seem to be trickling back into my area now though.  I don't want to go the poison route since I don't want to take a chance of someone's dog (especially mine!) eating a poisoned rat carcass.

side note: is there an easy way to multi-quote on here?

According to city ordinance, you can only have (2) chickens.

If you want to fix the problem, call the C&C and let them know.

Just like before - they are all gone as suddenly as they showed up.  Don't know why.. they didn't have much time to get any bigger from when they arrived.

Calling the county didn't do much to help with the rats other than the guy telling me 'you gotta do what you gotta do' (paraphrased) when when I asked about shooting them.  Maybe it was the county that put out the poison a while back.  The guy did put me on a list of places for the sole island wide exterminator to visit.

+3 more tonight.  184.

I remember thinking 'wow, getting close to 100' about 100 ago...

Damn, I love this night vision!

(I still lust for a brush vanishing X-ray thermal scope)

I've tried over a dozen different pellets and strangely these are consistently the most accurate.  Doesn't seem like they'd be aerodynamic but they fly true. They are actually wad cutters for paper targets but they are just as deadly to rats.

If you haven't already, you might read the thread from the beginning when you have 2-3 hours free.   I think there are several who'd say its worth your time.

I have a very nice IR night setup - I'd be interested in seeing how it compares to your viper.  Which gen is it?  I'd want at least gen 2+ but that's a bit out of my price range.  At 50 yards or less I'd bet my IR does close to a gen2.  What I'd really love is a thermal scope but thats WAY outta budget.

I have 3 pellet rifles - a co2 .177 Umarex that was my main gun for a few months (after having tried a couple of VERY loud break barrel rifles) that is my quietest.

I then got a .25 marauder that is extreme overkill but if I slow it down to under 450fps (still overkill) it's pretty quiet.

Now my main gun is a .22 Marauder pistol with the carbine stock on it.  I run it about 500fps and the pellet strike even into rat flesh is louder than the gun itself.

All 3 have professionally built LDCs.

I haven't went to the trash pile yet since given permission. I'll probably wait until my woman goes on her trip in a couple weeks.

And oh yea, the reason I just logged in is to post:

+3 tonight!

181 total

Here is short video (8seconds)

I read most of it but went back and read the last few pages and seen your setup looks solid.  LDC's are sweet but don't have them for our stuff at this time as our control efforts are for natural resource work.  We got the viper system because we were gonna start night ops but that didnt materialize. My business partner has a marauder pistol like yours I have the rifle with scope because we use it for animals we may see while running traps and we use it for dispatching animals as well. For the pigs I have a .45 and .50 cal because some of our contracts restrict the use of firearms.

Looks like you have a game rich environment again according to that video.

This is what we use and IMHO the very best single kill traps although we have had a few rare double's on mongoose. I can guarantee you a rat or anything else for that matter will not get away from one of these. We currently went to all DOC 250's they are pretty loud when the go off though.

Best wishes on your rat management program!

Aloha!

Yeah both dual chamber Sam Yang's the 45 is the big bore and the 50 is the dragon claw!

Texan looks nice!  I went to purchase it and they were out of stock. I sent them an email to see when they are expecting it back in stock. Thanks for the link.

My business partner has it at the moment will see if he's done with it yet.

Pretty sure out of stock because still In preorder stage.  Due out in less than two weeks though.  It's only been in the hands of professional reviewers so far that I know of.

Sorry a little off topic... Hoping you'd consider larger vermin too.

Would like to poison mongoose at work. It's sick when you see on average 5 - 7 mongoose just driving in and or leaving work. The problem in Waikele (Kipapa gluch) area is really bad. Mongoose have checked the feral chicken population, don't see any chicks. Targeting doves and other game birds too. Don't want to think of how many game birds are killed. Bird season would be a lot better if there were less mongoose. Wish the state would offer a bounty or give out irradication permits.
Robbie you and your buddies are doing the environment some good. Best poison is always lead... lol
Go gettum... Happy hunting...  :shaka:

B808,

Sorry to hear about the mongoose issue at your workplace. Too bad you cant take um out during lunch break or something lol.

Man if they offered a bounty that would be awesome. In one job we caught almost 300 in 8 days it was crazy for a while.

300 in 8 days?  Dayum.  I thought my 186 rats in ~7 months was a lot.

Yeah it was pretty hectic lol but we were trapping not shooting so higher percentage since we had a bunch of traps out.

186 under the conditions and restraints youre dealing with is an awesome body count keep it climbing. Makes me wanna go back to my youth with the air rifles Ive got now and do some damage lol.

It's probably a good thing I didn't have a modern high power air rifle as a kid.  I did enough damage with a .22 LR (and had more respect for it than I would've for a pellet rifle).
My ammo consumption was kept low by constant lack of funds as a kid.  I could have bought 5 pellets for each .22 LR.
