Hi guys & gals,

I’m sure many of you have heard the rumor about the target limitations at the K.H. Rifle Range.
To recap -        No targets at 50 yards
                        No steel targets
Paper targets only @ 100 yards.

Well, I have received word from Admin, and it is good and bad news.

The good news is that the new rules will NOT be instituted.

The good // bad news is that Admin is committed to refurbish the Rifle Range again.  This will mean closing for Rifle Range for as long as it takes to do the job.  I have no timetable as of yet, but will keep you informed.

Thanks,

new guy

Can you ask if there is anything we can do to assist with refurbishment? Maybe get some of the gun shops involved?

After all if the rifle range sucks/is closed I imagine they sell less ammo + kit.

Thank for the update Mike! Called the east office this afternoon and was told that paper @ 50 was ok but nothing else. Whatever it takes to make things rite should be done. If your looking for some volunteers to help with the work leave me a PM.

I hope this means they haven't set a date yet for closing. If it's open I'm guessing the range will be busy this weekend.

The attempt to organize a referb happed before the last shut down, we were ready to go, and then we were shunned by the city.   My theory....  it would get to much good publicity, showing how the gun community pulls together, and the strength of this culture.  The anti's would not be able to handle.

Yeah well I figure it doesn't hurt to ask. I can swing a hammer/cut wood/etc as ably as anyone else. I'm also a GIS consultant so could assist with spatial analysis work needed. Anyway just offering.

Sorry, I am being pessimistic.  We need to stick together and form a common ground, a plan, and carry it out uniformly in order for any real positive action to take place.

If and when they do refurbish we should push for 200 and 300yd targets to be reinstated. The plans for it exist already, I've seen them.
It would be different from what it was before, no more steel I'm sure, but at least we'd be able to practice at those ranges.

Hey man every one's got their ups and downs.

Definitely getting 200yard + 300 yard targets up would be choice. 100 yard is pretty pointless. Heck you can hit stuff with a pistol at that range (no pun intended!).

So how do we get a cohesive, balanced message out there? Safety concerns have to be part of it.

the KHSC cleanup day was to take place during the rifle range shutdown
it was in addition to the city's redesign efforts, NOT a part of it
the work downrange must be done by the city or it's contractors

It would be nice if the action bays remained opened while the pistol/rifle ranges are being refurbished.

Well I do hope they eventually put metal plate back up past the 100yard line. Its quite easy to angle the plates so that any potential deflection goes into the dirt, and they can always add tires or other measures like creating a shack around the plates to further contain any flyers. I know from using longer distance ranges on the mainland that few people wanted to lug their target frames out to 200+ yards repeatedly , and that was on leveled and graded ground. The rough terrain and brush behind the 100 yard line makes it even less likely that people would do the same at KHSC, to say nothing of the long ceasefires required to allow people to come and go out to those ranges.
