I want to get some ammo! NOW! [Big Island]
« on: August 16, 2014, 03:23:44 PM »
There have been a few incidents from before and after the storm that have me wanting to get more active with my firearms:  a .44mag & an SKS.
I'm thinking of picking up 1k rounds of the mil-surplus 7.62x39 only because I now have to learn to operate the SKS left-handed and will probably need to use a lot of ammo so that it becomes my primary side as quickly as possible. I am naturally Left-dominant, but have been forced to do many things RHed: eating, writing, using firearms, etc.  Several years ago I finally taught myself to use the .44 LHed because I am Left-eyed. Now I need to do the same with a rifle.

Plus, I took my first, since moving here, "go wander around in the brush" excursion. I ran across some game trails and a whole big bunch of pig tracks all over the place. I'm hot to go get me a pig.

The ammo, powder and primer availability seems to be a major hurdle to getting this together. One place I stopped by says:  "What you see is all we've got, and we're not getting any more".
I've only found 2 possible sources for powder and primers here on BI.
One has not returned my inquiring phone call made a couple of week before the storm, and the other is on the other side, too far away to just conveniently drop by to see what's going on.
A few comments seen here in the forums have me thinking of trying to place an order for powder and primers with a mainland supplier.

Can anyone advise me on who will ship to Hawai'i and how it is accomplished?

Will I need to go the full route of obtaining an FFL for personal use?

Will Hawaii's regulations affect bringing these things in like it did bringing my firearms in?

Go to OGC before 6:00 today.

1000 rounds Magtech 240GR SJSP 44MAG $599!

This week, XRing Security had TULA 762X39 124GR $5.99 PER BOX/ $289 PER CASE (1K) -- one sale just for the 14th.

Follow OGC and XRing on Twitter, and you'll be able to take advantage of their ammo sales soon enough.  Labor Day is just around the corner!

Mauidoug, braddah is on the Big Island. I modded the title to note that.

For shipping stuff in from the mainland (powder and ammo) you're gonna have to freight it in because of it's hazmat nature. I did the research for Oahu, but don't know about getting it to BI.

The only FFL you'll be able to get for personal use is an 03/Curio and Relics license.

I believe OGC will drop ship ammo to outer islands for a fee.  Give them a call.

Correct.  From OGC's webpage:

Thanks guys for your responses.
@mauidog
2ahawaii is right. I'm on Big island. No way I can make it to Oahu, or get it back to BI if I did get it.
Thanks for the attempt to help anyway.

@2ahawaii
I would think that getting a shipment to Hilo would be no harder than getting one to Honolulu.
Cargo ships call at Hilo just as they do there.

I think I've found  a few mainland suppliers that say they will ship to Hawai'i: Powder Valley, Graf & Sons, On-The-Mark and maybe Widner's.
Anyone know of any others?

Some of my checking around leads me to believe I'll have to run it through a freight consolidator.

I'm not scared by this.
I was a contractor in Ak doing bush jobs for many years.
Arranging shipments is not totally new to me.
I just need to learn how it applies to these materials being shipped to here.

@Heavies and mauidog
Thanks again guys.
But, as near as I can figure getting ammo shipped is just as difficult as getting powder and primers shipped. If I have to deal with all those garbage regulations and procedures, I'd rather get the components and build my own.
An 8 lb bottle of powder and a couple thousand primers for each of my firearms should keep me in ammo for several years, if properly stored. Plus, it should also cost a lot less than an equivalent amount of manufactured ammo.
Before buying and shipping ammo, I want to look at the economics of rolling my own.

And, I'm fairly new here, so who are OGC, LGC and other supplier acronyms?

Go to this forum's main (home) page, and scroll down to the VENDORS section.  https://2ahawaii.com/

OGC, as well as other Local Gun Shops (LGS), take phone orders.  Most times you'll need to pay a 3% credit card fee, but there are time you do not.

I suggest you leave a post for OGC to start, and see what they can do for you.  Unless you do group buys and large volume purchases, the HAZMAT and other ammo-related costs will be way more than buying from OGC and having it shipped.

I'm not trying to push OGC on you.  They just seem to have the most consistently low prices compared to most other shops.  They are having sales almost every week on something!  Just check out their Tweets, and you might see something you like.

Good luck!

My answering post got lost.
So, I'll try again:

Thanks mauidog
I got side-tracked and didn't get back to check on this until late.
Also, thanks for the clarification on the abbreviations.
I will start watching the vendor forums here for ammo sales.

I don't use the "social media sites".
So, I don't think of them automatically as being sources.

Who have you called on the Big Island?  Stuebs Guns and Ammo, Tokunaga, J Hara, Sports Authority, North Pacific Firearms, Kona Reloads, Blue Water Hunter, etc?

Sorry about not getting back sooner.
But, one thing and another, then Iselle, then the lava flow, life got a bit too complicated to think about this very much.
I did watch OGC's sales, though.
I missed the .44mag sale about the time I first posted this thread.
I did call them about a week ago when they had SKS food on sale.
But, I only wanted 1k rounds.
I got the impression they did not want to sell that small of a quantity to me.
So, ammo went on hold again.
Then, I decided to take another look around Hilo for a source.

Before, Stubbes' did not answer their phone and were not at the address they had listed.
I stopped buy another shop, didn't get satisfaction.
Called a few others, didn't get satisfaction, or even get a return call after leaving a message.
I guess I was dealing with island time.
So, about a week ago I made a list from the phone books and went on line to Stubbes' website.
They had a different address there than they had had before.
So, I went by.

I GOT AMMO!

I want to put a scope on the.44mag and sight it in.
Plus, I want to work a bit with the SKS to pick up LH usage skills.
There is no outdoor firing range on B.I. so I'll need to find an area where I can do it without complications.
I understand I'll need to get a hunting license in order to do this "without complications".
Then, as I read the hunting regs, I can't have more than 1 firearm in my possession while "hunting".

So, I need to get my Alaska drivers License traded in for a Hawai'ian one so I can get a hunting license.
Which makes me think, I'll need to take the hunter safety course won't I?
How do I get that done?

If I was going to stick it in someone's face to do them some bodily harm or take their property from them, it would be so much easier to do, no regulations to worry about.

Do you have proof of taking a hunter ed course in another state?
