Traveling with ccw license (magazines)?
« on: August 25, 2014, 09:58:38 PM »
I just thought I would throw this question out there to see if anyone has knowledge on this topic.

I was wondering what ccw permit holders use as far as magazine capacity wise goes when they travel to states that allow concealed carry and high capacity magazines.

Would you just travel with limited 10 round magazines?
Or have multiple standard capacity "parts rebuild kits" and reassemble them in destination state, then disassemble before traveling back to Hnl?

Just wondering on legality and opinion here?

Depends on the handgun.  I have several with standard magazines that hold 10 rds or less.  My Glock 30 holds 10, and my M&P Shield 9 holds 7 standard and 8 with the extended mag.

For handguns that can have standard mags > 10 rds, It's legal to purchase them out of state to use them for carry there.  Just disassemble them for the trip home.

Once the mags are disassembled they are considered magazine parts kits, and therefore legal to possess in Hawaii.

And here's a tip:  don't get drawn into calling a magazine that holds more rounds than some arbitrary number set by a legislator "high capacity."  The manufacturer sets the standard capacity of the mags for their firearms.

What we have in Hawaii are LIMITED CAPACITY or BLOCKED MAGAZINES.  What you want to carry when traveling are standard capacity magazines.  But, if you do happen to acquire a 30 rd Glock magazine, then I guess that qualifies as high capacity. :)

Yep. I totally agree. I prefer calling them "standard capacity" as that was the intended capacity by the manufacturer. I only call them hi capacity if it is more than that.

And I figured it would be alright to buy them in the state you intend to carry. But if you buy 2 standard capacity magazines every time you go on trip (if you travel at least once a month) that would get expensive. (But then again you would have a lot of mag kits. So that's a bonus

"High capacity magazine" is another made-up meaningless term (as is "assault weapon", etc.) courtesy of those who like to confuse the low-information folks into thinking particular tools and accessories are evil. Though I'd have to say that "high capacity" does seem applicable to this Glock 100 round magazine. I wonder if that breaks down into a "parts kit"? And what does the holster for that thing look like?  :shaka:   :stopjack:

At the risk of sounding like an anti-gun apologist; what is the practical application of a drum mag on a handgun? Seems like it would be extremely heavy and impractical for.. anything.

Probably pick up an AR drum mag at some point; those definitely look fun.

I don't have any mag parts kits. But as far as I know, they are completely legal here in hawaii. I was looking for people with personal experience. Has anyone tried taking "mag parts kits" with them on a trip to a 2a friendly state. Then returned back through TSA with the re-disassembled parts kits?

TSA does not enforce, nor do they report to the state, anything about your guns/gear.  As long as you comply with the TSA and the airline's guidance on transporting firearms, they don't really care what you have or even if you own them.  In fact, every time I've traveled with a gun case, they didn't even look in the case before I locked it.  The exception to that would be places like New York where declaring a firearm has gotten people arrested because they unexpectedly had to stay the night due to flight delays.  As a non-resident, they can not possess a firearm while staying in a hotel over night.  Checking in the gun at the airport required the airline to report it to the police.  Of course, that didn't get into what kind of gun or mag, just that you had any gun at all.

Yes I brought some "mag parts kits" back for a friend last time I went to the mainland. Neither the Airline or the TSA cared, I had a bunch of AR parts and my 11 lbs of ammo in my luggage. I told the airline about the ammo and asked if they wanted to verify the  weight and they did not.

TSA cannot legally handle your firearm. If they have any issues pertaining to your firearm, they have to call LE to come assist them.
