Barnes 85gr vs. Nosler partition 100gr?
« on: November 08, 2014, 08:57:10 AM »
Hi guys.  I hunt with a .270 and have recently set up a Tikka T3 .243 for the kids.  How would a Barnes copper bullet in 85gr do in comparison to the Nosler partiion 100gr or any soft point in 100gr.  This will only be used to hunt axis does.

I have never taken an Axis deer but would go with the 100 gr. bullet.  Heavier the better in my opinion  Good Luck!

If you're hunting Axis deer with 243 win.
Like 338Kid quote "accuracy is final". Really like Barnes TTX bullets usually choose one step lower in standard grain weight. Need to keep your speed up and to ensure good terminal ballistics and killing power. Barnes like to be pushed hard anyway from my experience. Pretty sure you'll have clean pass throughs.
Nosler 100 grain partitions would probably be a better all around load. If you choose to go slower. Better expansion at lower speeds.
Usually not as accurate as btips or bonded  :shaka:.
Are you handloading?
Good luck and go gettum.

Thank you 308gunner and Barrett808.  I have some of Federal with Barnes TTX in 85 and Power shok in 100 soft point.  I would hate to have the Barnes just pass through and give accupuncture! :grrr:

Barnes TTX bullets in small bore 223 & 243 are killers.
Used my AR 223 handloads to take bucks in Maui 53 grain TTX had more damage than 243 Remington factory 100 grain corelokt.
Buddy shot a buck with the 243, shoulder hit buck kept going. 223 (53 gr) TTX put um to sleep. Then did CSI. Barnes TTX damage looked like it came from a 308 150gr SP on the insides. 243 damage was minimum. Shot was around 100 yards.
Like small bores for eradication and for recoil sensitive young shooters. Just got smaller blood trails to follow. Good luck!
Noscade can tell you about poor performance with Winchester white box 100 grain SP in 243.

Ive seen similar with 243. Bullet seems to be traveling to fast to cause damage.
Do you reload for your 223 or is that factory ammo?  Ive heard stories of guys having to track far to get their deer when shooting 223.  Bullet doesn't expand enough or cause enough damage when hit

All custom handloads. Yup shooting deer with 223 ain't the best thing to use. Small puka hardly any blood. Factory ammo is iffy IMHO for hunting. Not talking about rancher or outlaws out there.
So many better calibers to use.

So if I use Federal Power Shok 100gr sp or Federal Fusion then I should have good controlled expansion?

Don't forget the role distance plays... too far you may not get the expansion you need.

Only heard of good results using federal.
Black box winchester  supreme are real accurate loaded with nosler  ballistic tips. Not like econo  white box stuff.
Good luck!  :shaka:
