Random women beaten to death in car with sawed off hammer.
« on: December 08, 2014, 11:05:17 PM »
A 60 years old retired school teacher was randomly chosen and brutally beaten to death in her own car last week. This happen in broad daylight in an open market full of people.
The suspect used a sawed off sledge hammer, purchased  just a day earlier. The suspect was apprehended  yesterday in a statement the suspect said it was much more easily concealable; shortened.

I think we all know the common sense solution to the epidemic of hammer violence... no one needs a hammer for hunting building demolition anything. Contractors and appropriate trade union members could be given, by the government, a discretionarily-issued permit-to-acquire after undergoing a background check and being photographed and fingerprinted and biometrically scanned in whatever other ways the state has deemed necessary for all our safety. Hopefully in the near future smart technology will be developed and the primitive hammer and nail construction method will be unnecessary and we will be able to eliminate all hammers and the scourge of violence that results from their possession by citizens. Many earlier cultures had no hammers and used other methods of construction, and those societies are well-known for their total lack of violence. MomsDemand #hammersense.

Yeah, I didn't cover all the "memes", but I have to go with George Carlin on this one (poor copy but audible):

What about those weekender DIY'ers, would they get grandfathered in?  Or would they need to turn those in?  I wrench for a living and have a few of varying sizes, would the automotive/heavy equipment repair field be given an exception?

I sure hope no one uses a 1/2 drive and/or 3/4 drive breaker bar and/or ratchet in a similar fashion.  Snap On Tools are expensive already.  It would suck for the newbie techs try and buy these tools in the "panic", prices may jump 3 to 4 times what it costs now.

How many do you need ?  You should only be able to have  ONE, and only after you show a compelling NEED.  You must be a hammer nut.... :o

For my job, I need all of them.  It would be over kill to use a 10 lb sledge to punch out a 3/32" roll pin.  Then using a 12 ounce ball peen hammer to punch out a master pin on a Cat D7 Dozer track.  I could and actually plan on purchasing a few more "dead blow" style hammers in a few weeks.  Come to think of it, I guess I could be classed as a "Hammer Nut".  But then again I prefer having many different size wrenches than just having 1 Crescent wrench.

Oh no "dead blow".......  that sounds scary and unnecessary...  You should turn them all in to the authorities.  Maybe they can sponsor a "hammer buy back" program?  [/sarc]

I think we can learn several things from the original article re the China hammer murderer that would be useful here in the U.S. to stem the tide of tool violence.

1. "Police also found a hammer, which is thought to be the murder weapon, at the scene. Members of the investigation unit went to hardware stores around the area to trace the source of the weapon. After checking the identification number on the item, police discovered that a local store had sold the same hammer one day before the crime, said investigators "

Congress should pass a law mandating that all tools (hammers, pry bars, chisels, wrenches, etc.) and anything metallic or wood or polymer longer than 3 inches (pipes, dowel, etc.) be required to have a serial numbers embossed by the manufacturer, and that this number be recorded by the seller at point of sale and reported to the government for confirmation when the item is registered by the user, preferably requiring at least three trips to the police state station during normal working hours.

2."After his arrest, Liu reportedly said that he recently broke up with his girlfriend. He also stated that he was drunk and in a bad mood when he ran into the victim, according to police. Authorities said Liu claimed that he committed the crime on impulse and did not mean to commit murder."

This shows the failings of the Chinese system and how we can improve to deny deadly assault tools to the mentally unstable and intoxicated. Of course we need to ban alcohol. This will greatly improve the safety of all citizens, as many sociological and criminological studies confirm that alcohol makes a substantial contribution to all kinds of violence and injury. We need to expand the mental health system in a way that anyone under stress from anything, including relationship problems or mood swings, impulsivity, etc. can be denied a permit to acquire during their background check. This could likely be accomplished, if not now, in the very near future, by implanting a chip that would monitor brain chemistry 24 hours a day and send any readings indicative of stress or bad moods to the appropriate agency database that would then render any applicant a prohibited person. For the children.

3. Congress also needs to pass a National Tools And Pieces of Metal or Wood Act, that would require extensive paperwork, more detailed background checks, a wait of many months, and a minimum $5000 "tax stamp" in order to be allowed to shorten the handle on any tool to whatever length is determined to  be convenient for criminals. Lengths 1/16 of an inch longer than the minimum would be perfectly legal without any bureaucraticf intervention other than the regular background check, etc., because those lengths are perfectly safe and never used by criminals. Though of course the ultimate goal is to ban all such weapons via incremental restrictions. By the way, we fully support Americans right to keep and bear tools.

It's just common sense!

Again, a tool sitting on a table does not harm anyone.  The problem is the mentally unstable person holding such tool.

Unlike the weekend hobbyist, I am a US Army trained technician, with the official job classification of 63H Track Vehicle Repairer.  I may not have been Tier One.  But believe me I know my hammers.  I have been in some intense engagements.  Severe pounding of track pins, steel bushings, torsion bars, etc...  Swinging of hammers is common in this field.  It's not for the mentally weak.  Eventually I got out to follow the money in the civilian market.  Funny how I ended up working for a few companies that have DOD contracts.

Sorry for taking this OTR, LOL...

An open end, box end or breaker bar version of any size drive wrench is O.K., but when you start getting into ratchets or pneumatic, you are DEFINATELY entering the "Fully Auto" world of wrenches and no civilian needs that much wrench to loosen or tighten a nut or bolt.
These types of wrenches should be strictly reserved for police and military use only.
