POLL: Have you ever LEGALLY carried a firearm in public?

Just getting a feel for the degree of experience on this subject.  We've had a billion comments on here about CCW and Open Carry.

My impression is that most have never legally strapped on a pistol to run down to the 7-11 at 1:00AM!

The question was truncated and has a misspelling, so here it is (can't seem to edit the poll question):

Have you ever legally carried a firearm in public, either open or concealed?

This excludes:
(1) rifles and shotguns while hunting,
(2) arms while deployed with the military, and
(3) firearms required by your job.

Generally, this is for carry as a civilian.

Used to open carry in Louisiana.  Although, to be honest, I'm not sure if it was legal, or just ok.

Other than to/From HPD/Range/Gunsmith I've never carried a firearm.  I'm open to it though

Since this is a Hawaii gun forum, most people will be "D"
If this was Texas gun forum, answers would be different.
I've never carried, but I'd like to see our rights given back to us as it should be.

Have you ever legally carried a firearm in public, either open or concealed?

No.
And that's all I have to say about that.

I understand the reason we expect most on this forum to have never carried ... nobody can get a permit.

What I wanted to gauge is how many might have carried legally at any time, in any place and in any fashion.

Quite a few of the members are associated with  themilitary which means they get to travel.  Others travel for their jobs, vacations, and to visit family and friends.  As such, it's not uncommon for Hawaii residents to carry where no permit is needed, or to acquire a non-resident carry permit that allows them to be prepared where they plan to visit often.

Case in point:  My first time carrying was in a place that allows open carry on your person and open "carry" in a vehicle if the weapon is in plain sight -- no permit required.  Concealed on your person requires a permit.

So far, the results are not as polarized as one might have guessed.  Around 40% have carried (A, B, & C), and  around 55% have not.  At this point the "have carried" versus "never carried" are approaching an almost even split.

Reflecting on this, I wonder if my history is part of why I feel more comfortable with the thought of practicing open carry than concealed carry.  To me, open carry is natural.  I grew up doing it.  I didn't carry daily, but if we were out at the range, we got to wear the guns from the time we left home until the time we got back.  And that typically included stops for snacks at the Handee-Mart or a visit to the grocery store on the way home.  Pre-teens, and their dad, walking around with sixguns in holsters at the Piggly Wiggly never merited a raised eyebrow.  A 12-year-old walking down the side of the road with a shotgun or rifle never resulted in the authorities being called.  Hell, the number one fashion accessory for a pickup truck was a gun rack in the rear window, complete with the mandatory truck rifle!  People had guns, same as they had dogs or shoes.

Concealed carry, though, seems to me like you're trying to get away with something.  There shouldn't be any need to "get away with" carrying.

I know, I know, there are differing school of tactical thought.  I'm not here to argue that.  I'm just doing some self-reflecting, realizing things about my psyche and attitudes, and how those were probably shaped by my life so far.
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

I think if you asked if anyone has ever carried legally HERE, then it would be a one answer poll. :D

Carry (almost exclusively concealed) where ever one of my three non-resident permits allow me to do so....

Is on my property considered public? I would tote my shotgun in public view on my farm quite often in the past.

It depends whether you open up your property for the public to come on it?  If you run pony rides and lei making classes at your property, that would count!

Not in Hawaii, but used to in the Los Padres (SoCal) mountains.  Carried my .44 Mag Super Blackhawk on the belt while hiking in case I ran into a mountain lion.

Still have no idea if it was legal or not, never ran into a ranger.  Probably would have said I was just looking for a place to plink or some such.

I carry for work. Although my answer disqualifies me I must say that the novelty of being allowed to carry eventually wears off, it does have a major "security blanket" effect though that everyone should have the right to feel. I never leave home with out it!

Carried concealed in 2000-2001 when I lived in WA state. Like day said the novelty wears off but you can tell when people concealed carry by nuances and fidgets or improper wardrobe.

Took a class outside of LV recently and the vast majority of the people there open carried, including myself. Let me tell you it's a different experience standing in a urinal, looking to your side and seeing the guy next to you holstered. Men, women and kids (12 and up I believe) open carrying whether it was in the classrooms, store, lunch counter or walking around was a sight for me to see. Easy way to meet new people and start up conversations with others though..."what you carrying and how do you like it."
