DIY Kydex holsters
« on: August 03, 2011, 11:51:23 PM »
I got onto the internet today and somehow it occurred to me that maybe  I could make my own holster, since my wonderful Cougar is a pretty rare breed, and it's difficult to find accessories that are designed for the gun.  Lo and behold, I find that you CAN make your own Kydex holsters, and after arming myself with knowledge from several youtube videos, I feel like I'm about ready to order some material and give it a go.  But before I do, I figured I'd throw out the question and see if anyone on here has actually done it before.  So, if you're on Oahu, you've molded a Kydex holster for your pistol/knife/magazines/etc, and you wouldn't mind showing a guy the ropes, let me know!  If nobody's done this, that's cool, too.  I'll learn by doing and be ready to help you with yours!   :)

Haven't done it, but my friends and I are seriously thinking about trying to make some.

Well, I guess whoever is quicker on the draw (har har) and gets theirs done first can provide input for the other.  Best of luck to you, sir!

^^^haven't moved on getting those made yet.  I think the biggest issue will be how to secure the two shells of the holster and other stuff.

my friend has a Raven inbound.  I'd like to see how they address joining the two shells.

The 2 halves are riveted together.   Both pieces are likely oversized when formed, riveted, then trimmed to size.

This guy's tutorial is my inspiration.  He does make them oversize to start with, then cuts them down to size.  Looks like a pretty decent holster to me.  I looked a lot of tutorials online, and most of the guys were doing the folded taco style, which IMHO generally ends up looking pretty low-budget.  I'm going out to the garage this weekend to see if I can get a press put together; I think I've got enough scrap lumber lying around to build one.  Still pondering the design, though.  Unfortunately, Mrs. Cougar probably isn't going to agree with me when I tell her I need a plasma cutter and arc welder to make a replica of the presses they sell at knifekits.com,  :( but I think I can get the job done with some plywood.

Anybody know if there's a craft store or something on-island (Oahu) that sells Kydex?

Don't know any on island source, but they do sell kydex kits online.  I'd like to try and make one as well, but have not had the time or commitment to sit down and try.  Maybe in 2012.

Did some Kydex experimentation tonight.  Had a kydex holster for a Beretta 92 that didn't fit my Cougar.  So I heated the oven up to 300*, tossed 'er in there, and waited until it looked kinda floppy.  Then I pulled it out, stuck my pistol in, and just formed it by hand with gloves.  Without a press, I wasn't able to get it formed to my gun, obviously, so in the holster it looks like a 92, but it grips my Cougar very nicely.  Doesn't look too great, but it doesn't look completely hand-made, either.  Draws and holsters nicely, and now I'm more determined than ever to build a press, get some virgin Kydex, and make myself a holster or two!  I really don't think this Kydex stuff is as hard as people make it out to be; as long as you have some tools to build a press.  We'll see how it goes, starting from scratch, but I'm pretty confident that I can put something together that doesn't look like it was assembled by an overweight redneck in his wife's kitchen.

I'm sure your wife doesn't mind if you use the kitchen.

The leather one I was creating hit a snag with a few....problems...at my parent's house. I've been looking at Kydex for a while now. Thinking of buying that kit from kydexknifekits.com or something like that.
