I am as liberal as they come, but I also believe in the right to own firearms. I don't understand why my party is so scared of guns when they aren't the problem. Young black men are shot every day because of the war on drugs, income equality, and lack of inspiration. Helping these kids is how we can make progress. Help to bring up our youth with respect and hope, not by passing restrictive laws that don't help. Guns are not the problem.

You don't want to be reading the comments from the "liberals/progressives" if you have any issues at all with blood pressure. At least this person gets as far as acknowledging that guns are not the problem and supports the right to at least "keep" arms. As for "inspiring" criminal youths to be law-abiding citizens, and providing "income equality"... I'm pretty sure that's a call for even more government laws and "income redistribution"... they exact thing that has lead to the current situation where most gun crime and gun murders are by and between minority youths in the urban welfare centers. How much more "free money" would it take to turn that around?

This is really a stupid poll since it doesn't take into account where people are voting. The votes need to be divided up by state as some states have restrictive gun laws and otehrs have much less restrictive gun laws. It cannot just be added up to have some sort of national census on the issue. Two people in different states might have the exact same gun views and vote differently because of their differing state laws.

It doesn't matter which state. Whatever the gun laws happen to be in any particular state, the poll asks if you support more restrictions in your state, whether that state be Alaska or Connecticut (where background checks are required to purchase ammunition, etc.).  Currently (2:30 PM), 94% of respondents oppose further restrictions in their state, regardless of what the current restrictions are or aren't. Perhaps the 5% voting for increased restrictions live in the states with the fewest restrictions (Alaska, Arizona, New Hampshire, etc.), but I wouldn't be surprised if the people holding such views are, or border on being, total civilian disarmament prohibitionists, and may likely live in the most restrictive states already, but want more restrictions, because if anyone other than the "only ones" has a gun, only bad things can happen, or something.,

This poll is associated with a PBS article about the Connecticut gun laws and how they were changed after the Sandy Hook School shootings. I didn't include the link to the article in the original post because at some point during the polling the PBS article pulled the link to the poll, so you couldn't vote. I wonder why they would do that? Fortunately, some commentors on the article posted the recently deleted link to the poll so people could vote even if PBS didn't want you to (after asking you to vote). Here is an excerpt from the article (note that "large capacity" as they use it includes "standard capacity as normally sold with the firearm from the manufacturer" as we in Hawaii are unfortunately familiar with):

The new Connecticut law strengthened gun laws that were already on the books. The law:

    Made background checks universal for all gun and ammunition purchases
    Limited the ability of the mentally ill to purchase guns
    Outlawed more than 100 additional assault weapons, including the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle that Adam Lanza used in the Sandy Hook shooting
    Banned large capacity magazines holding more than 10 rounds

Good point since it is so high but I wonder how representative it is among the actual population. It certainly isn't very scientific. I guess I just wanted to see results among the different states and see what people in different states think and compare that to whether they are restrictive or not.

So it would seem he would agree with us about liberals.

 We should remember that politicians look at this as "data" and actually pay attention since it could mean losing their job.

24 hours after the original post here are the current numbers for the poll. There have been 58,007 votes in the past 24 hours (more than tripling yesterday's total), and those opposing "more restrictions" increased from 92% to 95%. Again, this isn't a "scientific" poll by any stretch of the imagination (the respondents are "self-selected"), and it won't likely have any influence on anyone in a position capable of and desiring to enact more restrictive firearm laws, but I think it might show that the "grassroots" definitely favor those supporting diminished infringements of Second Amendment guaranteed rights. That Bloomberg/Gates/Ballmer, et. al. money can only buy so much "support" from real people. As we saw in Washington state with I-594, the billionaires outspent the opposition by at least 10 to one, for a law that they claimed was supported by "90% of Americans, including NRA members", and they only garnered 59.3% of the vote. Explain that please. (Yeah, I know, the crazy gun nuts were motivated and turned out to vote, while the common sense gun regulations folks mostly stayed home...).
