steel target frame
« on: February 16, 2015, 08:06:59 PM »
made this frame today from galvanized pipe from city mill
had them cut a 10 foot length into 5 two foot lengths and thread each end
used 2 90 degree elbows and 2 T fittings and 2 short nipples to go from the T to the 90 for each of the legs
used 2 hose clamps to secure the chain to the cross bar
I could have saved some money by not threading 1 end on 4 of the 5 two foot lengths of pipe.
i added a cap on the end of each leg.
and 2 S links for the steel target.   :geekdanc:

I noticed that heavy steel structure sitting on your beautiful hardwood flooring.
Weren't you concerned about scratching the floor?

The other thing I noticed is there doesn't seem to be anything to keep the legs from spreading out.
What, Me Worry?

I was real careful putting it on the floor
I screwed it in pretty tight but can still fold flat for transport
Hopefully can push it into the grass/dirt and that'll hold it
But we'll see when I test it out
I'll give it a knock around test tonight

I've thought about a design much like this, and several others.  Let us know how it performs!  Also, what was the bottom line in terms of $$$?

total cost was about $55 for the piping and fittings (without the steel target and chain)
chain is less than $5 depends on what kind of chain you get, then add the steel target cost.
the hardest part was getting the pipe cut and threaded.  city mill did each cut for $1, and each thread for $2.50
i really didnt need to thread both sides of the 4 legs and do the caps on the ends, so that made it more expensive
I was thinking of getting the Caldwell rifle gong and frame for $115 on amazon which was the cheapest i could find
so total cost may be in the 85-95 range, still cheaper than the caldwell one.

The use of hose clamps for mounting the chain is inspired!

3/4" pipe?

I used 1/2 inch pipe.  only bc it's a little cheaper.  we'll see how strong it is once it gets shot.  lol.
the hose clamps are also cheap and easy to install, no drilling, and can adjust the width of the chain, or can take the chain off

I'm going to be trying "the last stand target stand" 39$ w/o shipping on Amazon. It's a rubber mold, that holds 1/2" rebar and looks like a winnah   you can also break it down so it's fairly portable. As far as my steel targets is concerned I'm going to mount them using cargo straps, I heard fire hose is good to use too, it last a lot longer then chain from what I've been researching. I should be getting my molds in the mail this week. Will post some pics as soon as I get it.

Check it out, there's also videos on YouTube as well :D

fellas speaking of target stands if you hold on for a week we are testing a locally produced product similar to the rubber and rebar type but it's much more compact and portable and less Hassel to bring to the range. It's already prototype just need to range test.

If any of you want to see how your frames survive being pounded by a WWII battle rifle in .30-06, let me know!  I'm happy to help out in the name of science!

If you are out on Sunday morning, stop by bench 94 and say hello. Some of our members have some pretty big iron shooting 500gr projectiles. Really rings out and tests our steel targets. If it can survive that, it can survive anything.
