does anybody open carry in their home? Does it get in the way of things? Think the neighbors would panic and call the police if I stepped out of my garage to throw out the trash? I'm about to purchase my first pistol and am wondering what people's experiences with open carrying at home were

Don't go unto the sidewalk when taking out the trash as that's city property.

You can if you want, I do not.  Here is my thinking.

1. Hawaii is a very left leaning state, and many of your neighbors may be that type.  They might feel threatened, afraid, anxious....  Might call the cops on you.  At the least they come and question you about it.  why go through that and become a watched target for those who are confused about self protection/responsibility?

2.  While open carry might serve as a deterrent while you are on the premises, it may also make your place a target when you are not.  Since we are not allowed to carry our firearms around with us during normal everyday activities, it is pretty much guaranteed 90% of the time the guns are at home for the thieves and chronics to grab.

Conceal carry at home is what I would recommend.  There when you need it, discrete when you don't.

    I try to ccw on my own property as much as possible and my neighbors know.
I'm usually in the yard, garage or at my desk but even a G19 all day is heavier than you think.


   May actually go to a .380 now that I've seen this . .

I don't open carry at home but the gun safe is slightly open.but I do carry on my bosses farm, he feels comfortable with us carrying on his property, due to trespassers and thieves..

You learn quickly about muzzle awareness and should always be vigilent to prevent an incident.  Sometimes yes it does get in way.   

For example, when at home I sit or stretch out in a variety of positions to be comfortable vs. outside the home.  This leads to the firearm pointing directly into my leg as it's bent over when I'm squatting or something.  Sure it's not going to fire w/o pulling the trigger but safeties can fail or who knows what and it still violates the safety rules.  So I remove the holster and set it aside close by.   Then I forget about it (watching tv, going kitchen for a drink, whatever).  Of course have a back up (my wife) who doesn't really take joy in reminding me where I leave things but glad she does it anyways.  I have left my pistol on the counter in the can more times than I care to remember.  Or even by the door when get a delivery - excited to get a box in the mail and rush upstairs to open it... Doh!  firearm is downstairs where I left it, stomp stomp stomp (running downstairs to go get it). 

I used to just pull my shirt over it but sometimes have to cross the threshold outside to sign that's why I started unholstering inside first so nobody does anything illegal right.

It gets interesting when trades come over to do work.  Normally go concealed then and know have printed clearly at times.  It got real quiet that time LOL

This is just some examples from the real world.  YMMV et cetera et cetera et cetera

Hawaii/Oahu is a different place these days.  It seems, IMO, to be getting worse by the day.  No matter were you move on this rock there is a distinct possibility of problems occurring in which you might need immediate self protection.  Neighborhoods that were once thought to be peaceful and safe have been targeted.   And who is rich enough to just pick up and move?....  hehe.  not me, that's for sure.  Why should we be the one cowering to the thugs anyway?

Most sane people with a choice would too.  (although if you live in bear country or baboons etc this is moot as you probably chose to live there).

Been working on my truck alot lately to the point where I just holstered the piece under the truck !

I understand the right to but I have a different mentality when at home. I don't want to be at DEFCON levels. I want to relax like Hugh Hefner surrounded by blonds and in PJs. My home is where I decompress. Sure, I'd like some protection, but the homeowners' association doesn't like my idea...

    Yeah, it should've been under the "training poser" post. 

1)   Exit vehicle, (evade)
2)   roll under truck (cover and concealment)
3)   retrieve firearm (arm to defend)
4)   shoot agressor in the foot to bring him down to your level.  (stop attackeer(s) using minimal threat to life)
5)   secondary action if necessary (nuetralize threat completely)

But seriously, I never felt the need to home carry. I suppose it has a lot to do with where you reside.
My neighborhood also has a lot of dogs. They all work in unison to keep the homeowners alerted.
