For my most common environment which is our tropical / sub tropical rainforest (jungle) I am finding that the Parang style of knife / machete has become one of my favorites and a great all around tool.  Great for clearing the types of vegetation that we primarily have, great chopper and I also use it quite a bit for splitting animals down the spine when dressing them.  I like the overall design, shape and blade angle.  I can also use the edge near the handle for finer work.

I have a katana and a shinobi (ninja sword).  The katana is a pretty nice one, but the shinobi is a practical one that is meant to practice cutting techniques.  When The Walking Dead came out and Michonne carried that katana all around, my friends were like "you can use those swords!".   ;D

Just like guns, the movies make those swords look super light.  They actually have a decent amount of heft to them, which actually helps with the cutting.  Watermelons don't stand a chance!
