Recently traveled to & from Vegas commercially with a Pelican im3100 (40") one way, then an SKB 2 rifle case (50") the other.   No oversized charge either way.   Could be at the discretion of the gate agent I guess, but both (PHNL & KLAS) agents said they routinely check in items up to & including surf boards with no oversized charge.   Travel was with United.

In January I shortened a guys aluminum rifle case by 4", I don't remember the before or after dimensions, but he said he will "save a hundred bucks every time he goes to Alaska to hunt".

I don't know when this was updated, but it seems close for when my daughter took a Pelican 1720 on Hawaiian Airlines to WA last year.

Cost, weight limits and size limits vary based on the airline, departure airport location, destination location, ticket code (how & how much you paid), cabin class, military status, and total number of bags checked.  If you have the "better" frequent flier statuses, that can add a free bag or eliminate oversize fees or increase the overweight limit another 20 lbs.

Best advice is to try and keep the weight under the limit.  Airlines are more concerned with the amount of fuel a heavy bag uses than a bigger bag that weighs well below the limit.  Even though they are squeezing as much $$ out of travelers for baggage fees as they can lately, they are more likely to cut you a break on the oversize fee.

Pelican 1750 to and from Vegas on Hawaiian Air and no oversize fees..

As a military member I can bring 2 bags with me on delta.  Most of the time they waive the fee for my rifle case (the short pelican case).  However they charged me the standard baggage fee for it once or twice saying rifle cases don't apply to the waived bags.

For many years I have traveled all over, various airlines with 2 or 3 pelicans that I check in and one is a 1720.  I do not go over the weight limit and I have yet to be charged "oversized" for it.  Not saying they can't, just that I haven't so far.  Maybe I should knock on wood.  As mentioned it depends on the person helping you.  I have seen a lot, but again not charged oversized fees.
