Why are the 2 sleeping in separate rooms?

Chances are, a dog would have prevented their being targeted in the first place.

Both being armed says they are concerned about self defense, but not concerned enough to invest time and money in a wireless alarm system?

I was surprised that the guy had the gun in his hands while sleeping. You'd think that he might accidentally shoot it in his sleep?
They have a camera system and a panic button installed so they probably are concerned about crime.
The fact that the burglars defeated and got in undetected means their system isn't so good.

Either that, or they just didn't set the alarm before bed.

I read that this video is from S. Africa FWIW.  Agreed, bad practice to sleep with gun in hand.  Crazy in fact.  But maybe they been invaded before so figured best place was in hand or extremely close vs. on nightstand.  They got big freaking problems where and how they chose to live.  Their security absolutely SUCKS.  In this case it was totally non-existant.

He was watching vids in bed jacking off and fell asleep instead of taking care of business like setting the freaking alarm.   Isn't that what it's there for, not so much to protect the house but the occupants! There's a Stay function for a reason and Instant as well.  Why give the creeps any break.  They should be blown to smithereens just jacking the window open. 

the guy is lucky he didn't blow a hole in his own foot stumbling down the stairs.

they had a cam in the upstairs bedroom but not the downstairs where the GF was.  drats.  she had no hesitation to draw and FIRE - the right and only action, just needs more range time.

Ah good point and not sure if shown this video - have good external lighting ON at night.  Light(s) out indicate a problem.   

Also the perps will look just like silhouette targets.
