Depends where you live, eh? My neighborhood is mostly safe.
Then there are areas nearby my house where I would not want my kids to walk...period.
And sometimes even upper class neighborhoods  are not immune to wack jobs.
My daughter was in Hawaii Kai and there was some weirdo near Kaiser hs.
Now she is in aina haina and there was a warning letter sent out about a wack job over there.
What, Me Worry?

When I was growing up I had to go home when the street lights came on. Mostly because I used tell my mother I never knew what time it was so I was never home by the time dinner was ready. That is when I started to use my BB gub to shoot out the street light in front of my house.

I remeber riding my bike down to Gibson and playing video games until I was out of quarters.

Yeah, I live in HK too, and my daughter goes to Kamiloiki. Next year Niu Valley. We received the same letters. The messed up thing about this is that despite there being a police substation less than 5minutes away, and the Kaiser student involved immediately calling the police from her cell phone after the incident, HPD was unable to reach the scene for almost 30 minutes. Strangely enough, they were unable to find the individual.

Back in the "old days" she would've been able to approach a neighbors house for help, and parents in the community would've banded together to find this guy, and help him up after he had fallen on is face.....repeatedly. Sadly, politically correct society promotes the "rights" of free range criminals over our rights to protect ourselves from them.

yeah
one of my patients told me when she was little, the creepy old man used to follow groups of kids walking on kahuhipa street in a huge four door car
and i told her that the difference between then and now is that back then the dads and uncles would get together and pull the guy out of the car and beat the crap out of him and tell him that they would keep on doing it until he stopped
now creepy men all over just go on the internet and are working all over the community the rest of the time

Yeah, the latest was just a couple of months ago. You don't always see these on the news but the school sends out an email and a letter. Earlier in the year there was a guy exposing himself to little kids by the school and the park. An enraged Mom saw him and got in his face and called HPD. Alas, he escaped as well......

This is exactly the solution we need.

Yeah, when I was an inner city kid, we had to leave the brick alleys where we played and be home before dinner when the street lights came on where we helped prepare the meal and clean up after.
We were "Latchkey Kids" who came home from school, did our homework, the chores then out to play while our single (divorced) mom worked.
There were at least a dozen of us (a gang ?) neighborhood kids ranging from 5-12 yrs old.
Kick the can, hide and seek, red rover... we never had creeps as that kind of $#!t was not tolerated by our parents, uncles and older cousins.
An unwritten law.

Aahhhhhhhhhh.

I was a latch key kid also.  When I was 4, I used to stay home alone while my parents were at work.  My parents were not ballahs, they could not afford to send me to pre-school.  Granted I grew up in a new subdivision mostly consisted of people/married couples in their 30's with a new house.  There was only a handful of kids I knew of around my age down the street.  I used to ride my bike all over the place.  My parents would turn off the breaker to the oven, so I wouldn't burn the house down.  After talking to my parents about this recently, they say they were lucky no one called the cops or CPS on them.  During kindergarten to the beginning of first grade I used to walk a half mile to school and back.  Nothing ever happened.  I was lucky to be able to get a bike.  I actually believe I got more hurt on a bike travelling to and from school because of trying to do stupid tricks on various ramps I could see than from just walking.

Before, I used make my son ride his bike around the block.  At first he was hesitant because of what his mom and aunt would say, "What if this and that."  Hell he could not even walk to his grandparents house afterschool just about 400 meters away.  After all my talking to him to finally just say f**k it and prove them wrong.  Needless to say, he walks to his grandparents house afterschool now.

I live in a great neighborhood.  The one neighbor on the side of me is always home because he just retired a few years ago.  The other neighbor on the other side of me, the stay at home mom/grandma is home majority of the time also.  The one neighbor in the back is another stay at home mom with 3 year old and an infant.  So yeah, we hear the neighborhood gossip every now and then.  But bottom line, we alert each other about suspicious people/activities.  It's common for one of us to run out with our cell phones and video or take pics of suspicious cars/people.
