The use of snares in Hawaii are illegal unless you have a special permission from DLNR. I've used snares to catch big lizards and birds in jungle and desert environments.

Bass you should sign up for the Hunters Ed course.  It's free and I'm betting it will go a long way to addressing a lot of your questions..........and is required (depending where you are hunting).

No need to call, snares are illegal.  Below is cut from the hunting regulations.

§13-123-22 Conditions and restrictions

"
(10) No person shall possess or use tracer bullets, bullets with full metal jackets, blow guns,
guns powered by compressed gas, handguns, animal traps, slingshots, crossbows, poison,
explosives, or snares. Legal game mammal hunting weapons include rifles, shotguns,
handguns, bows and arrows, and spears and knives. Only weapons that are authorized for
the particular hunt are to be in the hunter's possession, while on the public hunting area."
Relax, I've banned myself..

There is a difference between hunting, survival and nusiance pest control. Hunting is normally viewed as sport unless you are hunting to survive. The use of snares may be appropriate when your personal survival requires you to trap or snare animals to prevent death from starvation. Nuisance pest control is to prevent critters from destroying your food crops or stores, spreading disease, or generally doing something you don't want them to. You may be able to apply for a wildlife control permit to shoot, trap, snare, poison or otherwise destroy critters you don't like on your property. Snares may be a viable option as long as you have the permits to do it legally.

I totally agree from the survival standpoint. OP was discussing hunting with them.

"Hunting" means different things to different people. I invited a friend to go "hunting" with me because he told me he had been hunting most of his life. I asked him if his hunting license was current to which he replied that he never needed one. I then told him that the correct term for his activity was "poaching".
