Blown up Glock
« on: July 26, 2015, 01:56:36 PM »
I heard from one of the RO's at the pistol range today that someone blew up a .40 Glock this morning.  Apparently it was a double charged reload that split the barrel open--a "banana split" was how the RO put it.  I guess no one got hurt.  Anyone witness the "event" today?

Today a gun owner severely damaged his Glock pistol while firing a cartridge containing double the maximum recommended amount of gunpowder!

In other news, gravity is believed to have caused a three-year-old toddler to fall down at the playground.

I don't reload .40 cal so I cannot speak to it being a double charge. But with 9mm you can't double charge the case without powder overflowing the case. I suspect the same may be true for .40 cal. Maybe someone who loads .40 cal can verify this for me.

Yeah I'm thinking the same thing about the load.............possibly a full power on top of a squib?  I just can't see the overcharge splitting a barrel.

Exactly why I asked the question. My guess is that they either used the wrong charge, not a double charge which would have spilled over and would have been obvious. Or more likely to my thinking is that they used the wrong powder. Or maybe even a combination of both?

Guess the first question to be answered is "was it a "bad" reload" ?   >:D
If not, most likely a squib.  :shake:
And if that was the case, I would've hoped someone to the right, left or middle would have called it CF.

Possible and easy to double charge a 40 case.  Did it myself and fortunately caught myself doing it.  I'm sure it happens all the time.

Depends on what powder.  You could double charge a .40 case.

I think it looks funny that the barrel split so perfectly longitudinally. I have never seen a barrel split like that before.

Apparently the word on the street is if you want to shoot reloads in your 40, 45 and 10mm Glocks you should replace the stock barrel.
