An AK-47 type rifle is loads of fun and cheap to buy and shoot.

I have a Smith & Wesson M&P.40 that I like a lot!!
Its extremely user friendly, comes with adjustable grip sizes (S/M/L) that are easy to change out which make it very comfortable. Plus its deadly accurate!! As for what caliber you want, well that's up to you....the .40's nice. Plus you can buy the .357 barrell and swap it out.....the mags will take both the .357 and the .40 also, so no need buy seperate mags.

A few features:
night sights
swappable mag release/safety (left or right handed)
tactical rail
exchangeable grips (backstrap)
can fire w/out mag inserted if a round is chambered (an option I chose)

Anyhow, I hope that helps a lil.

What is your budget looking like?  What purpose will the pistol be for (plinking, self defense, IPSC/IDPA, etc.)?

Why not get a wheelgun? you could get a .357 mag and shoot cheaper 38spl at the range. I'd recommend a ruger gp100, sp101, or no lock smith&wesson.  Or If you're set on a auto, I second the m&p for poly pistols. Most comfortable grip I've handled.

I agree that the M&P grip is comfortable but if you want to feel the ultimate in ergonomic comfort, wrap your hands around a HK P30.

This is the gold standard in comfort.  It's expensive but mmm mmm mmm, it feels good in the hand.

With $1300, I'd probably have a Ruger GP100 and a Super Redhawk in .44 Magnum. I like this spending other people's money.

$1300 definitely gives you a bunch of options.

My recommendation is to buy one ( or more ) guns that are "shooters".

You've got plenty of time in life to buy collectible pieces.

Find guns that you enjoy shooting.

Thats why I love my Glocks and AK's and 10/22 so much.

They're just so damn fun to shoot.

Actually, Glock $499, AK $499, 10/22 $219. That s $1217 plus the obligatory 4.712% tax of $57.35 = $1274.35.  Oh my gosh, I think we've got a winner.

If you are talking wheeled handguns, then I'd suggest a S&W 460V or 460XVR.  You will be able to shoot 45 Colt, 454 Casull, and 460 SW Mag.  Ammo won't necessarily be cheap, but with that handgun you can hunt almost anything in North America and definitely anything in Hawaii.

You can build yourself a nice AR for that kind of money too.  AK is nice as well as it'll be enough to hunt with as well, but I'm not sure how hunting ammo would be for an AK.

OMG if I had $1300 to spend on a handgun this is what I would get:

That's nice.  I'd also put a Springfield 1911 into that mix.
