Best LGS for an FFL Transfer
« on: October 04, 2015, 12:44:39 PM »
I am looking to do an FFL transfer in the next few weeks but because I can't exactly leave work to buy a gun, my wife may actually be doing all of it. That being said, is there any shop that's easier to deal with for a transfer? She's never had to do this process before and I feel bad having her do it but it's about the only option. Assuming they're all equal, I'd guess SEC just because it's so close to HPD. Anyone have a preference either way? SEC and OGC are the only ones I've been to so far.

ETA - the rifle may also sit there for a few days, but I'm assuming they're used to that because of the stupid licenses.

SEC informed me last week that they are not doing FFL transfers.

OGC is easy to deal with online.  It your firearm is coming from the manufacturer they probably have OGC's FFL info already and it's even easier.

Do you have a valid long gun permit?  Is it in your name or your wife's?  If it's not in her name, then you either have to apply for her long gun permit and wait two weeks, or go yourself to transfer and register the rifle with your permit.

Depending on your work schedule, maybe picking up the rifle before 6PM on a day they are open until then, or on a Saturday, would work.  You have several days to register it after the transfer, and HPD firearms section opens at 7:45AM.  They are open during lunchtime, too.  If that gives you time to register before or during work, you can do it all yourself.  If your wife really needs to register it, then have her go pick it up on that Saturday with you and transfer it into her name.  Again, this assumes you both have a valid long gum permit.

OGC said they've held guns for deployed military customers for as long as 1-2 years.  Let them know when you'll be picking it up, and they should be fine with it.

I've used OGC for many FFL transfers from out of state.  As survivorman said, if the vendor already knows of OGC, there's no need to transmit a license to them.  if you do need to send one, you do it online from OGC's website -- totally self-service.

OGC also offers current & former military/LE a discount off the FFL fee.

Neither of us have a permit, that's the hard part. I applied for one but wasn't able to make it down and pick it up after the waiting period which was very frustrating. I could probably make it work but we have a major field exercise coming up and this is a limited release rifle which is why she may have to do it all. It's a Noveske though which I know they sell so that makes it a little easier not having to coordinate the FFLs.

You can have HPD mail the permit to your house, but you have to personally accept delivery or pick it up at the post office.  Most signature receipt packages are held at the Post Office for 15 days.  If not claimed by the addressee, it gets returned to the sender.

Go to the Post Office at your convenience, get the appropriate services on a self-addressed envelope (the rules are in the law), and turn that in when you apply for your permit.  Long gun permits are good for a year.

Once that's out of the way, the next hurdles can be negotiated.  Until you get the permit, nothing else is possible.

I tried that when I went to get it the first time. I told the post office that I needed exactly what was on HPD's site "certified restricted delivery return receipt required" but I guess what they gave me wasn't correct. That still may be a better option assuming I get the right envelope from the post office and OGC doesn't mind holding the rifle a little longer. I'll call them tomorrow.

I had X Ring bring something in for me. Great folks to work with, but I did think that $50 was a bit high.
Shame on me for not asking first.

Did you sign a green slip before checking out? If you did then you did the right thing, and HPD is, yet again, full of shit and making up rules.

No I didn't. I paid something like $6-8 for an envelope. HPD said it should be closer to $13 I think.

Dwayne Lim is a really nice guy but I think he's only open after 4 pm on weekdays and on weekends.  His shop is in Pauoa and its called Danger Close Tactical.  His ffl fees are about the same and maybe slightly lower than most other shops.

I am going to second this above. Military transfers are $31, http://www.danger-close-tactical.com/Firearm-Transfer.html

I doubt that he would mind holding a rifle for you either. As mentioned above you would have to square away the permits to acquire for yourself and or your wife.

I am a admitted DCT fanboy but it's for good reason.

Previously I have used Al (Ready on the Right) and not by choice but due to a group buy Gun Source for transfers.

X-Ring  has usually been my choice for FFL,. They have been great on my tardiness due to scheduling for permits and pickups.

I will be using OGC and Ready on the Right for my next two transfers, never dealt with either before. Please don't ask why I had to choose two separate FFL's for these individual purchases.

Big Al at Ready on the Right.  And, BTW, you do not need a permit to acquire, since you purchased this firearm in another state.  Tell HPD "I bought it in another state."  Your so-called "permit to acquire" only entitles you to buy a firearm within the state of Hawaii, which you did not do.

Tom is correct IF the rifle is one that you left back in Virginia. You can have it mailed to you, then take a long lunch and register it.  BUT if its something you purchased online, then you'll need the permit to acquire and FFL.

This isn't one that I already owned and left in VA - it's a new one so I'll have to get the permit.

Big Al at Ready On the Right.

Just give him a call and see if he can accommodate you.

I'd heard Al is retiring.

Cool.  I thought it was just about immediate, nice to know he's hanging around for another year.

Was interested in taking over the business from him, but he said that Hawaii no longer allows FFLs outside of commercial zones.

In other words, Hawaii is on some bullshit as always.
