up at 5am loaded the car and was on the road about 6.  Finally reached KHSC around 0645 and noticed I was one of the first that arrived.  Didnt pay any attention to the cones as I entered, then noticed the yellow tape.  Spokde to an older gentleman and asked if the range was closed, his reply, "not sure".  After a few minutes of confusion another gentleman said the range is closed sat & sun due to police investigation.  Looked at where he was looking and sure enough there it was.  A small sign on a 8 1/2 x 11 sheet.  Oh well, better luck next time.

I have called around and this is what I have found out.
Range is closed due to the pending investigation of yesterday's brush fire. Someone is said to have fired a flare that started  the fire after the range closed yesterday. He has been arrested. I'm bummed.

Damn, that really sucks....I wanted to go shooting tomorrow!! 

I know the brush fire wasn't cool an all, but at least noone got hurt! The first thing I thought when I saw "Police Investigation" was that maybe someone at the range got shot. Or worse yet, someone shot at, or hit, a hiker on Koko head!

I think that there should',t be any hikers behind a rifle range. From what I understand the trail came after the range. All it takes is some hiker to bitch and complain about the hazards of having a rifle range near the trail or if an errant hiker wanders into the impact area of the range.  Hikers get lost easy. Look at how many "strayed" into Iran.

I think we should take advantage of this to make our collective voices heard....what purpose was served in closing the entire range to investigate a fire that was basically confined to a relatively small portion of it? What consideration was given to the fact that closing the island's only range would adversely affect the large number of shooters and potential shooters who's only opportunity to shoot or learn to shoot is Kokohead? Especially if, as some are saying, that the incident was caused by range employees shooting a flare on the rifle range after hours!

Go out there and take a look--the fire burned up nearly half of the mountainside, and it burned right to the trail.  Some had to be evacuated by helicopter.  Ever been threatened by a raging brushfire?  Not fun, I can guarantee.  The scuttlebutt is that three range officers were fired, one was arrested by HPD.  They supposedly fired off three flares after hours on Friday, the bonehead who was arrested was the one who actually fired off the flares.  Don't know what kind of flares/flaregun was used (fold down night sights, vertical foregrip, tactical laser, Surefire spotlight, titanium bayonet /wirecutter, G-10 grips, full length recoil spring guide, titanium firing pin, adjustable trigger, checkered frontstrap, etc.)   Those idiots are going to be the ones responsible for the calls to shut down the range permanently and make it into a golf course (remember that?).

JC...for real?  Where did you hear that the three guys were fired?  This is really going to suck... probably have more range closures and what nots if they fired some of the officers, but probably for the better if they were this negligent.

That's what I thought, too.  When I told my wife, her first comment was, "Oh, I guess somebody agrees with me about guns."  (She thinks civilians should not own firearms  )  Maybe these three a-holes decided they'd rather be golf course marshals than range officers?

and these 3 dummies are supposed to be in charge of OUR safety at the range?  Next time one of them tells somebody to slow their firing, or not to put more than 5 rounds into their magazine, somebody should say, "what, not like i shooting a flare into a bunch of dry grass."

"The Law Abbiding Citizen's are getting to smart.. they're learning more about their rights....uuuuuhhhh no, shoot it above the berm so we can get the hikers pissed off at the "Crazy Tax Paying, wanna protect their family, no good GUNAHOLICS"...but wait till we close the range and they all leave" 

I pray this is not true.  We need to get the range built on the leeward side.  I hope more people voice their opinion come NOV 2012. VOTE!
