If three of the employees were fired that would explain why the range is closed.  I think that would amount to half of the rifle range employees.  I hope it doesnt take the City long to find replacements.

I pray this is not true.  We need to get the range built on the leeward side.  I hope more people voice their opinion come NOV 2012. VOTE!

"what, not like i shooting a flare into a bunch of dry grass."

It's almost sounds like they were told to do that, you know.... "The Law Abbiding Citizen's are getting to smart.. they're learning more about their rights....uuuuuhhhh no, shoot it above the berm so we can get the hikers pissed off at the "Crazy Tax Paying, wanna protect their family, no good GUNAHOLICS"...but wait till we close the range and they all leave"  ::)

right?? i mean seriously..the only thing green out there is the paint on the benches.  WTF did they think would happen? Its like throwing a lit match into a bucket of gas and NOT expecting it to catch fire.  I can guarantee you that theres already people out there trying to use this as an excuse to close the range.

More details at the Hawaii News Now:  http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/15646184/firefighters-battle-big-brush-fire-in-hawaii-kai

"Police say 29-year old Kevin Nakagami admitted to firing a flare gun into dry brush near the Koko Head Rifle Range, sparking the fire."

I saw the smoke from Kahala as I was driving home from work Friday afternoon.  Then watched from my back yard as the flames went rapidly up Koko Head and towards the trail.  The winds made it worse.  Watched a bunch of people scramble back down the trail and the HFD and HPD helicopters doing their job.

I know some here on 2AHawaii are also on AR15.com - remember a few years ago when some City admin put the sign at the entrance to the trail prohibiting people from using it for safety concerns?  We all thought it was the admin's way to get the range closed down by driving a wedge between the hikers and those of us that used the range.  There was a neighborhood board meeting where apparently lots of hikers and shooters attended and the consensus seemed to be that neither group wanted to deny the other what they used the area for.  I didn't go to that board meeting (I did send written testimony to a couple of the boad members since this is my neighborhood), but it sounded like a few AR15.com'ers did go.

We'll see what this turns out to be - another attempt at messing with the shooting community or a case of genuine stupidity on Mr. Igotaflaregun! ' s part.

Is this the same Kevin that runs the Puuloa Club matches? Or is that last name not a typo?

If that report is accurate, yes it is.  Not sure what his status will be after this event.
Looking at this situation from a use perspective - it should not affect us as the customers of this range as it was an employee of the City that was negligent.  It would make no sense to shutter the range because a range employee was negligent.  We as taxpayers and gun owners are still owed use of this range. No matter how political some may make it.

Looks like the story was updated ...  and as always is the case with the media, there is more to the story.  I was actually hoping to hear more from shooters who were there that afternoon when I first logged in here, but I guess it happened after closing anyway.  So it could have been an accident, and not knowing Mr. Nakagami I retract what I posted in my last post about him.

I also was planning to go Saturday when I got a call from a friend who arrived there before me saying that it was closed. Regarding Kevin, I pray this not to be true. He's a stand up guy and as far as I've known him has always put safety in high regard.

It was just on the news.... Still looks like a setup.... I actually feel kinda bad for that guy Kevin Nakagami..... I swear, that guy was the most friendly, collective and easy to talk to.... Whenever I had a question about something, I'd always ask him......He's obviously the youngest and coolest there...  .....fishy.....  ;)

Yeah, he is definitely one of the coolest guys on the rifle side.

I hope he doesn't get charged too harshly.

If it is true about Kevin, that's a bummer.  Like others here said, he's one of the nicest guys at the rifle side.  He's always willing to help when I've asked.  Would definitely be interested in hearing what truly happened.

They showed his picture on the news.  He's one of the nicer ROs.  Sounds like it was an accident that started with a bad decision.

I notice a lot of integrity here.

He didn't run from his mistake, he owned up to it, he didn't try to spread the blame, he helped where he could, he did what is necessary when his slip in judgement caused the problem. You don't see this kind of integrity in people much these days. I hope they go easy on him because of this fact.
