Reloaders for hire
« on: October 11, 2011, 12:35:47 AM »
So given the cost of ammo out here. What if I was to say we were thinking about an FFL for reloading (packages in hand).  Currently we are reloading various calibers at dirt cheap (as we see it) and that we may be looking into the cost analysis of reloading for sale. Our reloads that we have shot to date are virtually flawless and we are reloading to factory specifications and our calibers have been fired in various weapons.

We have figured that we can reload for almost 1/3 (some calibers more) of the cost of you buying your ammo online and I dare say locally, OGC does have the best deals on .223 and various calibers and we still buy from them often. Carter does have the best deals, and If we cannot beat it, then you know where to go.

We really aren't looking to profit (just to cover operating costs, insurance, and tax) from it, but are looking at making it much cheaper for everyone to go to the range and blast off.  We would of course produce custom ammo as well depending on the need and would be willing to have the customer present when we put the loads together.

1. Would there be interest?
2. Opposition?
3. We will be doing this when we go to the mainland next year regardless.
4. We are willing to teach what we have learned so you can be self supportive. We will teach you on our machines.

I was thinking about this when we reloaded 500 .45 ACP @ ~6 $ for a box of 50.....just throwing that out there...

Currently we are reloading .223/5.57,  9MM, .38 SPC, .357MAG, .40S&W, .44MAG, and .45ACP.

Relax, I've banned myself..

$6.00 per box of 50?

I'll take it.

hahaha!  Thanks.....need a good name for it, and some Dillon 1050s for each calibers, the 650s are slow to reconfigure.  I think I have bought 1 box of ammo since I started reloading, only so I could copy it...my copy is better I think!

Before you get started, check wih the City about Zoning and if such activity is allowed in Residential Zoned area.

Not to mention ATF,  HPD and Fire Dept.

Think you may be classified as a Manufacturor.

You may have to have Special permit to store Explosives(powder/primers) beyond what is considered "home consumption".

Not to mention, you may be open to "inspection" by concerned agency at any time without notice.

There is definitely interest here....  =)

Ronak was a reloader I believe. When they left the business, quite a few people noticed.

Make sure you take account of insurance too. That will add to your costs. If you're costs are anywhere near what you think, you'll do a ton of business and have to get one of those motors for your dillon.

I'd buy ammo from you if you could make .45 for $6 a box. How much would 9mm cost?  What bullet heads would you be using, lead or fmj?  What grain heads?  Powder?

I recall my next door neighbor reloading in his garage whenI was in high school.  Mostly shotgun shells.  Personal use and he never sold his reloads.  I'm not aware that he had any special permit or anything to do so.  That was a while ago and things may have changed though.

Outside of rolling your own, buying reloads from a reputable source is by far the cheapest way to go, and I'd buy them.  From your perspective, though, I'd be worried about liability.  I think that having the appropriate BATFE stamps and insurance is going to drive up your costs significantly, but I'm sure that you could stay way under factory prices even so.

Looking into all of it, including the appropriate FFL and local requirements, similar to the change int he FFL law, I am suspecting that the production must be conducted and sold in a commercially zoned area.  Liability insurance and the massive tax (15% - this is what I heard) would be included in the cost.

I can produce them for that much, can't sell them and not go under when it comes to tax and liability.

I would say they would be cheaper than factory ammo.

I am also thinking the required FFL would take forever to obtain.

Guess we will see how things pan out.

Still researching.

Now if someone wants to buy components and bring them over, we can teach you what we have learned. PM  me.
