Thinking any mag caliber round in .30 cal or bigger would be able to penetrate 1/2" mild steel.

The M41A is chambered for the standard US M309 10×24mm caseless round, a 210 grain, steel-jacketed and explosive-tipped round embedded within a rectangular propellant block of Nitramine 50.

Guaranteed penetration

A plane ol' .308 might be able to penetrate 1/2" MS..  If not it'll make a nice deep crater.

Use M2AP (black tip .30 cal) in any '06 rifle.
