Depends what grade the stainless is.  Some stainless steels can rust more easily than others.

Pins are stainless but may have high carbon content which is why can pick them up with magnets.
I was thinking of just doing like Lihikai but was more worried about the rubber lining in the drum getting funky due to wet SS pins in there.   If it's good to go after 2 years should be alright.
